God's Ultimate Will

Monday, March 1st, 2010

Today's Passage: Colossians 1:3-11
Memory Verses: Col.1:9-11

Every believer has asked these questions at one time or another: what is God's will for my life? And how does this "will" affect my daily life? I'm so grateful that God doesn't hide His will from us, but releases it to us through His Holy Spirit. And this is the key: that we be filled to overflowing through time spent in the presence of God Himself.

Paul's prayer to the Colossians was that they would be filled with the knowledge of God's will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding. The meaning behind this action of being filled, as Pastors Chad and Antoinette ministered so powerfully this morning, is a continuous process, as though the faucet of the Holy Spirit is left on always, pouring into our spirits at all times so that we are full to the brim, lacking nothing needed to fulfill the Lord's calling in our lives.

Why is it so important that we be filled? So that we might walk worthy of the Lord, carrying His Name in a manner that makes Him proud to call us His own. So that our faith is so strong that we are able to see past our circumstances to His desire for us to prosper HIS way, not ours, which will cause us to constantly please Him through obedience rather than make sacrifices after bad choices.

We must be filled so that everything we do in Christ's Name prospers and is fruitful instead of becoming stagnant because we're not trying to keep it alive through the arm of the flesh. So that our knowledge of Who God is GROWS beyond our childlike understanding of Him that we received when we became saved. We must be filled so that we are not weak, but continually strengthened by the power of His might, fighting with the spiritual weapons we have been freely given, and WINNING every time.

If you are still unsure of what God's will is, make a commitment not to spend another day outside of His presence. Ask specifically to be filled with His Spirit, then remain in the posture to receive it. You will walk out every ounce of His will -- for that is the purpose of the in-filling.

Prayer: Father, Your ultimate purpose for my life today is that I be filled with Your Spirit. Thank You for showing me that I need to make room for Him so that I reflect the very essence of Who You are daily -- for strength, for wisdom, for knowledge, power, and victory. May I not only seek the in-filling for myself, but I pray this for ALL the saints, so that we all can walk worthy of You in these last days. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

Do You Have What It Takes?

Today's Passage: 1 Corinthians 15:52,58

Memory Verse: Phillipians 3:14

Sunday February 28, 2010

Hello Friends & Lifers! I pray you are walking in God's favor and mercy as you are being obedient to Him. Have you had the chance to watch the winter olympics? I'm amazed at how well the athletes perform, even while under extreme pressure. You don't have to tell me about the courage it takes for some of these events either. I'm reminded of the last ski trip I went on. Let's just say it wasn't pretty. The point of our devotional today is based on the mindset of the olympic athlete. All olympians have something in common no matter what country they're representing. They are dedicated to their craft, they are focused and driven, and they realize the flag on their backs will always mean more than the medal around their necks. Think about it. These athletes train vigorously for 4 years in order to win a two-minute event.

My Friends we have to consider having this mentality. 1 Corinthians 15:52 says "In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed". How's that for a down-hill ski time? We are literally training our whole lives for this short period of time. In doing so, we must be dedicated to our belief. Verse 58 in that chapter tells us to be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your work is not in vain in the Lord. We must also be focusd and driven. Paul said to the Phillipians (3:14) "I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus". Finally Brothers and Sisters we must realize that who we are will never be as important as whose we are. We must be ambassadors of the Kingdom of God. We must represent our nation with the holiness and righteousness by which it was established.

So I challenge you today to keep training. Fine-tune your walk with the Lord daily. Understand there will be resistance, but it only makes you stronger. Unlike the olympics, THIS race is not given to the swift nor the battle to the strong. We simply must be faithfull until death to win a crown of life.

Prayer:
Father I need Your strength to be made perfect in my weakness. If I am to finish my course, I must keep my eyes on You. You are my motivation and my inspiration. All I do is for Your glory...in Jesus' Name Amen

The Pleasure Principle

Today's Passage: Psalm 147:11

Memory Verse: Hebrews 11:6

Saturday February 27, 2010

Hi Friends & Lifers! It's the weekend again. Most people like weekends because they offer time for rest, relaxation, and maybe a moment to do something for themselves. As we all must be aware, sometimes finding the simple pleasures of life can be a hand-full. A moment of quiet, a favorite meal, that date with your spouse you've been planning for weeks, may all be forms of pleasure that make the end of a week so nice.

While studying to prepare for this devotional, I realized our feelings may come directly from the heart of our Father. He's always watching over us. He's diligent in the way He cares for us. His "days" seem to be filled with providing for us. So where does He find pleasure? He finds it in our worship. Worship is defined as reverent honor and adoration to God. It's a lifestyle that says we fear Him enough to know He's Lord, but we can still come before Him boldly as His children. Psalms 147:11 says "The Lord takes pleasure in them that fear Him, in those that hope in His mercy". It pleases God that we fear Him. It pleases Him that we don't take Him for granted or try to use Him like some "lucky charm". He also takes pleasure in the fact that we trust Him and put our faith completely in Him. Hebrews 11:6 says we cannot please Him without it.

So as you try to find those simple pleasures this weekend, remember God is looking for a little of His own. Let your life reflect a healthy fear of Him. Love Him in the good times and trust Him in the bad. Walk by faith an He'll always find pleasure in you. When you're in worship on Sunday remember it is "His" time. After all He's done for you through the week, He deserves it.....don't you think?

Prayer:
Father, I love You so much. Find pleasure in this life I'm living for You. Forgive me for the times I've taken You for granted or not believed You. You are my hope and peace. And You'll reign as Lord and King of my life forever. In Jesus' Name, Amen!

Got Your War Clothes On?

Friday, February 26th, 2010

Today's Passage: Ephesians 6:10-18
Memory Verses: Eph. 6:10-12

Imagine a soldier in the heat of the battle, well aware that there are landmines at least three feet apart within a 100-mile radius of the route he is planning to take. Having been through basic training, and even having experienced the fiery darts of the enemy's firepower from time to time, it would be pretty foolish of him to step outside with absolutely no protection, wouldn't it? Actually, it would be nothing short of suicide. The minute that soldier puts one foot outside the door, he's sure to be riddled with bullets before he even has time to dash back in.

Sorry to be so graphic, but do we really understand the full impact of the message the Lord sent us in this passage? Our battle is not against the people the enemy uses to attack us, no matter how real their assault may appear to be. We are told that our fight involves highly organized ranks of demonic forces whose sole purpose in life is to target, and srategize ways to cause the downfall of, soldiers in the Lord's army.

So how does He admonish us to counter these potential attacks? Arise, men and women of God, and put on your strength daily. There is no de-militarized zone anywhere, and NO-ONE in our lives is off limits to the enemy. Leave not one piece of your armor at home when you walk out of your baracks. We have been equipped with everything we need to detect satan's landmines, and stand against his more subtle schemes. From the top of our heads to even the soles of our feet, we are covered as we go about the business of serving our Father.

Would it be easier to run and hide? Not really, for there are severe consequences for going AWOL in the faith. Better to stand and fight, for there are more WITH us than there are against us (2 Chron. 32:7). As you fight bravely, the Lord will send ministering spirits to strengthen and empower you. Just show up to the fight with your war clothes on.

Prayer: Father, You are my strength, the One Who teaches my fingers to war, and my hands to fight. Be my covering today and everyday. May I never step out from Your Presence, for that is where my victory lies. Let me fight the good fight of faith and make You proud. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

Obey Your Thirst II

Today's Passage: Psalm 63:1-8
Memory Verse: Ps.63:1-2

Everytime I watch animal and plant life on television, it always amazes me how all of God's living creation has one major purpose. To stay alive and thrive, plants and animals will do just about anything to find water. Some animals will travel thousands of miles to be near a lake or river, while trees stretch their roots deep into the ground. Critters from the rat family have gone so far as to gnaw through pipes under homes in search of water to sustain them. Built into their physical makeup is the knowledge that they must have access to water, or they will die.

Which brings me to this question: why are human beings (myself especially) the only species that denies themselves water when it is the best thing for us? We have found countless substitutes like sodas and even flavored water, convincing ourselves that we can survive without the real thing as long as we are consuming some type of liquid. As a result, our bodies send pain signals to our brain, attempting to communicate to us that we need to be refreshed with water.

There's no doubt that this is what happens to us in the spirit realm. Even committed believers tend to lose sight of what's important to sustain us in this Christian journey. We look for substitutes to fill the void, not staying near our life source, which is the Living Water Himself. We can't be content with just a touch from God every now and then. To use this analogy of our physical bodies, the more weight we are carrying requires us to consume more water more often. By the same token, the more trials and circumstances that threaten to overburden us, the more of God's presence and the infilling of His Spirit we must have.

Today, get as much of the Lord's presence as you can. Go out of your way to find "God moments" where You can be with Him. And when it is time to assemble with other believers in corporate worship, don't miss the opportunity to go, expecting "to see His power and glory", just as you have seen Him show up before in the sanctuary. Lift your hands and bless Him with abandonment, knowing that you will certainly be filled to overflowing. Obey your thirst, saints.

Prayer: Father, You are my God. Early will I seek You. My soul thirsts for You in this dry and thirsty land where no water like Yours can be found. I choose to be filled by Your Spirit today and everyday. May my soul follow hard after You all the days of my life. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

H.U.M.P. Day!!!

Wednesday February 24, 2010

Hello Friends and Lifers! You know what day it is? It's H.U.M.P. (His Ultimate Mission & Purpose) Day! For those who are new to this, each Wednesday we challenge each other to step outside our confort zones and display the love of Christ to a neighbor.

Our mission today involves sharing. Before the day ends, knock on a neighbor's door and tell them Jesus loves them. Seems small? You'll never know how effective such a simple message is. Remember the rules. You have to talk to someone you don't usually talk to. You have to be stretched a bit (it takes faith). And finally, post your activity in the comment portion of this devotional. Now have a great day, afterall...it's H.U.M.P. Day!!!!!

Prayer:
Father, break my heart with the things that break Your heart.
Break my heart with the things that break Your heart....

Nobody Like Him!!!

Today's Passage: Psalm 18:30-32

Memory Verse: Psalm 24:7-10

Tuesday February 23, 2010

If you had the chance to meet anyone in the world who would it be? Come on, keep it real. And no....it can't be Rashean Mathis of the Jacksonville Jaguars (you know who)! But who would it be? Would it be your favorite actor, musician, writer/poet? Would you get excited if by some chance you find out that person was coming to your house? I know I would.

Now what would you do if I told you that the Lord Most High was stopping by? Would you get excited? We used to sing a song called "Who is like the Lord" during praise and worship. I remember the excitement we had because truly, there's nobody like Him. Nobody will ever love you the way He does. He'll never let you down and He'll never betray your trust. It's like being personal friends with the most powerful man in the world. How confident in yourself would you be then? Psalm 18:30 says "As for God, His way is perfect; the word of the Lord is proven; and He is a shield to all who trust Him". How awesome is that? So let's line them up: Denzel, Julia, Will, John, Cameron, and yes, even Rashean. While they're all great people, none of them can hold a candle to the One who's singing over you right now. He's the most popular person in the universe. But He still wants to have a relationship with you, yes you!

So I challenge you today to do as Psalm 24 says and lift up your head. Because the King of Glory wants to come in. Who is this King of Glory? He's the Lord strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle. If you know who He is then nothing should cause you to fear, or set you up to fail. He loves you my friends....and we do too! Have a great day.

Prayer:
Father, I thank You for your faithfulness toward me. Although I haven't earned the right to be Your friend, You still call me friend. I submit my life to Your Lordship and I'll never turn back again. Walk with me today. Be my sight and my guide. I'm Yours forever. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

Obey Your Thirst I

Today's Passage: Isaiah 55:1-3
Memory Verse: Is.55:1

Okay. It's tax time. We've all been contemplating throughout the year what we'll do with the extra income (after tithe and offering, of course). When you finally get the money, you experience a wonderful feeling of happiness at being able to meet your family's needs and even some of your wants. Then something weird seems to happen, though. Although your heart's desire is being fulfilled, an emptiness begins to replace that feeling of euphoria before the money is even gone.

What is that? Why is it that earthly things satisfy us for only a short time? Before you become tempted to blame this on the fact that there's always something else you need, look closer. This passage warns us that there is ABSOLUTELY NO pleasure to be found in the things of this world. If you're not convinced, ask any person who has lots of money. Better yet, go back a few books in the Word and learn from Solomon, who set out to discover and enjoy every pleasure possible under the sun. He had been given riches and wisdom unlike any other king in Israel's history. Yet even he came to the conclusion in Ecclesiastes that "all is vanity" (Ecc. 1 an 2).

So what is the solution? How do we manage to live a life of joy and true fulfillment? This, my brothers and sisters, is simply found in the presence of the Lord. In this passage, the Father calls out to us: "Hey! That void you're feeling is thirst for communion and relationship with Me. Your soul longs for it in the same way your body longs for water." He invites us to come and drink of Him, satiating our thirst in a way that nothing earthly can satisfy. He even reminds us that, though it cost Him everything to provide this living water, all we have to do is freely receive it.

Today, as you go about your daily duties in pursuit of your dreams and goals, don't go thirsty. Let the Holy Spirit submerge You in the living water that renews, restores, and flushes out of our spirits the evil influences of this world. Saints, the benefits to consuming this water are endless. Among them is the evidence of your spiritual health, which will be seen in the juicy fruit you produce. Obey your thirst!

Prayer: Father, I accept Your invitation to come and buy Your life-giving water. Fill my thirsty soul today and let me overflow with the life others are looking for. Too often, I have wasted time and resources on pursuits that held temporary pleasures. I commit now to seeking Your in-filling for the rest of my life. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

What's My Motivation?

Today's Passage: Psalm 34:1-3

Memory Verse: Psalm 7:17
Psalm 52:9

Sunday February 21, 2010

Remember the T.V. commercial Sprite aired a few years ago? The actor was trying to remember his lines but he was distracted by the soda. No matter what they did he continued to mess up the scene because all he could see was "Sprite". When he messed it up for the last time, he said "What's my motivation"? Which is an actor's way of asking what the personality of his/her character should be. I laughed hysterically everytime I saw that commercial.

Well it's Sunday morning and I want to give you your motivation. You're a person who just received another chance at life after being taken off death row at the moment of execution. As directed by the parole board, you have 90 minutes to express your feelings to the One who bought your freedom. You have to find Him to make sure He knows how much you love and appreciate Him, but there's adversity in your way. The thoughts of who you are and what you did plague you with every step. The good news is you've just been informed that He'll be waiting for you at Abundant Life Ministries today at 10 a.m. Get ready, hurry!

When you get to Abundant Life you'll find the set laid out for you. The Praise Choir will assist you with entering into His presence. They'll sing what He'd like to hear you say, so sing with them. They'll dance and praise to show admiration, appreciation, and submission. So dance and praise with them. Then, Pastors Chad and Antoinette will give you His instructions. You'll need to listen carefully and implement them to make sure you're never on death row again. Now remember, you may only have one shot at this. Don't forget your lines. If you need to review them turn to Psalm 7:17 in your bible and read the words aloud: "I will praise the Lord according to His righteousness, and will sing praise to the Name of The Lord Most High"! Don't get distracted by earthly things that only gratify the flesh (like the guy in the commercial). Understand that this moment is about you and Him. Okay, it's on you now. What will you say? What will you do? Places everyone....lights, camera, action.....

Prayer:
Thank You Father for redeeming and restoring me. I'll never take what Jesus did for me for granted again. I am so grateful for Your love and favor. My heart is Yours, my worship is Yours, my life is Yours. And I plan on showing my love for You today and everyday, in Jesus' Name...Amen!

Rapture Ready!

Today's Passage: Mark 13:32-37

Memory Verse: Phillipians 4:8

Saturday February 20,2010

Hello Friends and "Lifers"! It's Saturday and I realize my first order of business is finally unpacking the bags Yas and I used last weekend (Valentine's). Pitiful right? Anyway, the Lord quickly brings to my mind the 41/2 years I lived out of my suitcase while in college. You see, college kids who traveled a lot like Yas and I had a bag we rarely unpacked because every weekend we were going to sing, or coming home. During the week we would wash the clothes in that bag and exchange them for different ones. But the bag was always full. We called it being "Road Ready".

What if we applied this concept to Christian life? The bible says in Mark 13:32-33 not even the angels know when Jesus is coming back for us. God admonishes us to watch and pray because we don't know when He's coming back for us. In other words, make sure you live every day like a person in an airport terminal, ready for flight. Make sure you're always ready for Christ's glorious entrance for the purpose of our departure. Think about it: if we really lived this way, would we so easily fall into sin? Would we allow the enemy to sift us without a fight? Would we continue to judge or ignore the broken and addicted among us? Would we risk getting caught in that hidden sin we think God doesn't see? No, we wouldn't. As a matter of fact, we would never be caught with our spiritual bags empty.

The challenge today is to take our eyes off the things of this world and look unto Jesus, the Author and Finisher of our faith. Don't let your focus be on anything that has no function in heavenly places. All the material things of life (e.g. image, money, cars, houses, possessions, etc.) have one thing in common: they CAN'T help you get there, but they CAN hold you back. Put them in their places and let your gaze remain on God. We can't afford to be caught with our bags full of temporal things. The reason is, as Pastor Nette taught us, when it's time to get on "the flight" those things won't pass through customs anyway. So find things that are true, right, pure, and holy. Pack them and be ready because we're going somewhere......right?

Prayer:
Father I know you have a place for me in Heaven with You. Therefore, I realize I cannot allow myself to come into agreement with this world. Because I don't belong here, I'll commit to live everyday in preparation for Your return. Give me the strength to walk by faith, not by sight so that I may enter into Your glorious kingdom....in Jesus' Name, Amen!

Pass It On II

Today's Passage: Hebrews 4:11-16
Memory Verse: Heb. 4:12-13

Friday, February 19th, 2010

Do you remember the moment God's Word "quickened" you? I do. Can you pinpoint that moment when something happened on the inside of you, letting you know that it was time to give your heart to the Father? I can. All my young life, I attended a church where religion was king, but even then I knew there was something more to this God I was singing about.

When I finally heard the gospel of salvation (that Jesus died to bring me freedom from all my sin), and was ready to receive it, I knew at once that I couldn't accept Christ and remain the same. I think about all the people He put in my path -- people who bore witness of His unconditional love for me. To this day, each encounter is engrained in my memory.

Now that we are saved, we must carry on the gospel. God wants us to simply bear witness of what He did for us. Every time I think back to the times of seed-planting God orchestrated for me, I realize that those individuals who came and shared Christ with me didn't necessarily bring Bibles with them. I think what I remember the most is the LOVE which obviously compelled them to approach me.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that we need to be more concerned with sharing the gospel than with how people will react to what we have to say. This passage reminds us that God's Word is sharper than any two-edged sword, and can see through to all our intentions and thoughts. Just as Jesus did with the woman at the well, God's Word discerns right where we are (there's no fooling Him, mind you!) Then it draws and compels us into His love. With this in mind, let's pass on to others what we've been given.

Pass It On

Today's Passage: Isaiah 59:14-21
Memory Verse: Isaiah 59:19-21

Thursday, February 18, 2010

I remember growing up in a medical family. My parents both practiced general and obstetric nursing, so day in and day out there were patients of every kind coming to our home where my parents had a walk-in clinic. Years later, I always wonder why only one of my sisters carried on the passion for medicine -- until I read this passage.

Looking around us, it's not hard to see how young people can easily be influenced by the world's portrayal of "fun" and the good life. But if we allow the holy standard to be raised in our homes, where they are constantly hearing about Who God is and why we love and honor Him, their passion for Him will grow, and the flood-like influence of the enemy will be rendered ineffective. You see, what I realized about my family is this: although I was constantly surrounded by the medical field, seeing my parents get up every morning to work at the hospital, then come home to attend to their patients until late at night, they never shared their passion with us. On the contrary, every time I recall going around the clinic, I was told to go back into the house. Eventually, whatever interest I may have had in what they did for a living was lost.

Parents, spiritually this is what we must never allow to happen to our children. Psalm 145:4 says "One generation shall praise Your works to another, and tell of Your mighty acts". God has already fulfilled His end of the covenant with those of us who fear Him; He has given us of His Spirit, and has promised to continue to pour Himself out on us and the generations after us. But we cannot simply be content to bring them to church. We must be diligent to pass on our passion for His presence, and teach them to seek after God for themselves.

Because we live in a time when both parents have to work outside of the home, I'll be the first one to acknowledge that there are serious challenges to finding the time it will take to teach our babies to love God and live for Him with a passion. But if we do what our pastors have been declaring over us and MAKE ROOM for His presence in our day, God will honor our desire for Him and give us what we need to raise children who are on fire for His Son Jesus. Let's all make a conscious decision to "pass it on" today.

Prayer: Father, You are a generational God. You desire for us to be successful not only in our personal relationships with You, but also for our children to experience the fulness of Your presence and power. Holy Spirit, fill us with the passion we need to carry on the legacy of righteousness to our children and their children, for Your glory. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

H.U.M.P. Day!!!!

Today's Passage: Matthew 5:13-16
Memory Verse:Matt.5:16

Wednesday, February 17, 2010

It's H.U.M.P. Day! Yes, H.U.M.P. (His Ultimate Mission & Purpose) Day. Each Wednesday, the writers of this devotional page will challenge its readers to engage in one H.U.M.P. activity. We can offer ideas, but ultimately we want you to be led by God. So whether you pray for a co-worker's marriage, or buy food for a hungry family, it doesn't matter. Just get out there and do something radical to expand the kingdom of God!

Okay, here are some ground rules. First, you have to show the love of God to someone you don't normally have communication with. Second, let what you do "stretch" you to some degree-- you know, get you out of your comfort zone. Last, post your ministry act in the comment portion of this blog.

So let's get going!!! God's image is waiting to be seen by someone without hope today. We are His body, His image, His voice, and the manifold demonstration of His love. Altogether now....Hooray for H.U.M.P. Day!!!

Ideas:
Buy someone a meal
Give a child a blanket/coat
Visit the hospital/nursing home and pray for 1 person on your lunch break
Pray with a classmate at lunch

Prayer:
Father, You are so awesome. This day is going to be ALL about you. Show me who you want me to minister to today. Show me where you want me to go. Let me be the salt and light you called me to be...especially today!
In Jesus' Name...Amen

Nothing Like New!!!

Today's Passage: Isaiah 43:18-19

Memory Verse: 2 Cor. 5:17

Tuesday, February 16,2010

Aaaaahhh, the smell of something new! I know you've experienced it. Whether you've bought a new car, outfit, or pair of shoes, that smell is unforgettable isn't it? That fragrance is a reminder that the item you possess has never been owned by anyone but you. It also says this product is fresh, unique, unexposed to everyday usage. That smell tends to stick with you. Most of the time, it's the thing that draws your attention to the item you covet. It makes you want IT, no matter what it costs.

As we are made in the image of our Father, we must imagine He is not different in this regard. Isaiah 43:18-19 tells us not to remember the former things, nor consider the things of old. God goes on to say "Behold, I will do a new thing"! New.....imagine that! Our Pastors have defined new as something previously existing, but newly discovered. Which is the perfect summation of today's memory verse which reads: "If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation". See, man/woman previously existed, but after surrendering to Christ, they all become new. Their talk is new, their walk is new, their praise is new, even their decision-making process is derived from a totally new system of beliefs. And this draws God's attention, just like the smell of newness draws ours.

So I challenge you to walk in newness today. Throw out old habits and mind-sets and allow yourself to be totally led by God. Who knows, you just may hear God's voice say aaahhhh, the smell of something new!

Prayer:
Father you deserve the best I can give. I commit to giving You my all everyday I live. Lord, I want what I give to be fresh and new, too. I desire to keep myself free from habits that become religious and mundane. As You breathe a fresh anointing into me, I'll release newness back to You...in Jesus' Name, Amen!

Living Bibles

Today's Passage: Matthew 4:1-11
Memory Verse: Matt.4:4

Today, I happened to watch a movie that made a tremendous impact on my life as a believer. It was "The Book of Eli", in which the main character's mission was to get the only remaining copy of the Holy Bible to the West, where it could be preserved. For thirty years, he had watched over it, protecting it from anyone who would try to take it away. The events that followed astounded me (I won't spoil it for you if you'd like to go see it). After seeing this movie, I began to ask myself some questions.

Question number one is this: what if there came a time in our world where there were no more copies of the Bible available? Would I have enough of the Word on the inside of me to sustain myself and others in times of trials and temptations? Question number two: although that time has not yet come, am I consuming enough of the Word daily to be a "living bible" for others to see? Jesus was our perfect example of the Word made alive, combatting every temptation of the enemy with "It is written..."

People of God, the perilous times spoken of in The Word are here. Many will shun the written Word, often not even wanting to hear it from us. But they will never be able to stop us from living it before them, so we must live the Word -- not to hear them praise us for being so holy -- but so they can see what we do and glorify the Father. After seeing the movie, I was truly inspired to want to stay in the Word for the treasure it is, and for the life-transforming power it has.

As the ones called out of darkness into His marvelous light, may we make the Word our daily bread, not living on natural food alone, but by every word that proceeds from God's mouth. And may our faithfulness turn us into "living bibles" fit for the Master's use.

Prayer: Father, thank You for Your Word. So often,I am reminded of how vital it is that I stay connected to You by reading and consuming Your Word. May I not take it for granted, but commit to making it such a part of my life that it will flow out of me in every situation. Cause me to become dependent on it, and always stand for You. Todays's Passage: Deuteronomy 10:18-19

Memory Verse: Deuteronomy 10:21

Sunday February 14, 2010

Hello Friends! I hope you were able to wake up this morning rested and ready to take charge of what's going to be a great day. I am so filled with the love of God as I write this devotional. God's love is the most valuable benefit you'll ever have in life. I get goose bumps when I think my life has meaning only because the Creator of Heaven and Earth loves me. A moment please while I have a praise break.......okay let's continue.

Most people define love by the"warm and fuzzy" FEELING they get. But what's special about God's love is the way it FUNCTIONS. Deuteronomy 10:18-19 says "He administers justice for the fatherless and the widow, and loves the stranger, giving him food and clothing. Therefore, love the stranger for you were once strangers in Egypt". See what I mean? First of all God seeks justice (right standing) for those who have been neglected or left all alone. Then, He loves those who don't even know Him, providing them with everyday needs, not just lip service. Finally, He admonishes those who DO know Him to love the stranger as well (those who don't know God) because we were once strangers also.

How praise-worthy is THAT? God's love is like walking into the most exclusive spa or country club and getting top service although you haven't earned it, nor can afford it!!! So heads up Body of Christ!! You're God's chosen. Don't let anything or anyone steal your joy. Why? Because God loves you. Verse 21 of that same passage says "He is your praise and He is your God, who has done for you these great and awesome things which your eyes have seen". Yes, it's going to be a GREAT day indeed!

Prayer:
Father Your love is so amazing. Words cannot express how wonderful it is to be covered by You. Now I commit to take the love You've given me and share it with someone who may not know You. Use me as You see fit, and I will hear and obey... In Jesus' Name....Amen!

Ladies-In-Waiting (Single Ladies)

Today's Passage: Song of Solomon 5:10-16, 6:1-3
Memory Verse: Song of Solomon 6:3

Do you remember your wildest, most specific dream of something you desired in earlier years of your life? If you're like me, it probably was a beautiful brick home at least two stories high, with five bedrooms at the most and enough space for living as well as ministering to others. When your heart is set on something, you visualize being able to obtain it, and you keep it before you in order to never forget just how much you're looking forward to having it.

But in my zeal to have that home, I didn't think about the fact that my current attitude about where I am actually influences where I want to be. And so for a few years, I saw myself "settling" for a smaller house, believing that the one I truly wanted was just around the corner, and that any moment now it would be mine. And even though I still dreamed about that beautiful home, I began to see my life in the house I currently lived in as a prison, finding no joy or fulfillment in the many awesome memories that God had given me there with my wonderful husband and children. Sometimes, I would even feel myself being resentful towards God for not bringing my dream to pass in a more timely fashion, as though my only purpose in life were to live in my dream house.

Even though I have grown up a lot in the Lord, and begun to understand His love for us, I've still sought an answer to this question: why does He make us wait for desires that He placed within us in the first place? And He always answers by showing me just how much preparation I need for the next level of blessing in my life. What if God allowed me to get the bigger house without taking me through the process of learning to become a good steward over the smaller one? Without teaching me how to live well and with contentment in a space where my family and I have nowhere to escape from one another?

What if God gave David the throne immediately after anointing him king without first taking him through the process of learning to fight the lions and bears? What if Joseph had never gone through rejection from his brothers AFTER revealing his dream of greatness? I realize I wouldn't have lasted one year in the new season without preparation for it in my attitude, good habits of stewardship, and most of all, my RELATIONSHIP with the Father.

I guess what I'm trying to say to my sisters who are truly ladies-in-waiting (waiting for the dream of that husband the Lord has promised you to show up and sweep you off your feet) is this: be joyful in the season of preparation, even as you dream about your true love being everything you can imagine he will be. Don't forget, though, that your FIRST love is with you NOW. Don't shun the many hours of alone time you have with Him; this will teach you intimacy. Serve and wait on Him, fulfilling every desire of His heart; this will guarantee the fulfillment of yours. And being content with who you are NOW will teach you never to settle for someone who may only keep you from feeling lonely, but will never make your heart skip a beat everytime you lay eyes on him.

As God teaches you how to love Him first, then yourself, begin to prepare for your husband by saying like the Shulamite woman: "My beloved has gone to tend to his flock; he is being prepared for me as I am for him. He is mine, and I am his."

Prayer: Father, thank You for showing me that I need this time of preparation for the husband You have for me. May every moment of my life be filled with my love and service of You and Your kingdom, even as I wait for my desires to be fulfilled. Thank You for the wonderful things You have in store. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

Today's Passage: Proverbs 10:12
Memory Verse: Proverbs 10:12

Friday, February 12, 2010

Hello Friends! Come with me as I start today's devotional with a walk down memory lane. I remember being at my house playing in the yard as my mother baked a cake for that Sunday's meal. The house next to ours had a dilapidated garage that my brother and I loved to play around. As we played, my brother stepped on a nail....ouch! After hearing the commotion of it all, my mother called us inside to see what happened. Much to her dismay, the nail had penetrated his skin and his foot started to bleed. By this time my brother and I were really nervous because she had told us time and time again to stay away from that old garage, but boys will be boys right? Okay, to make a long story short, after washing my brother's foot my mother did what I thought was the strangest thing. She went to the kitchen and got some of the very items she used to cook, to apply medication to my brother's foot. I reference this memory because I remember my mother telling my brother "I love you baby, but this is gonna hurt a bit"! I realized that day that there are things in life that can serve many purposes.

The message in this devotional today is love, if used effectively, has many purposes. For some, it's a redeemer. For others, it's a peace-maker. Maybe for you it's a deliverer, or a comforter, or even a savior. The things my mother brought from her kitchen to medicate my brother's foot in my mind had one purpose, but placed in the right hands, they actually had so many more.

I think that's why God gives love. He said in Proverbs 10:12 "hate stirs up strife, but LOVE covers all sins". Yeah, like an all purpose household item. So whenever you make a mistake, remember that love is there to cover you. Oh, applying it might hurt a bit, because like my brother and I, you probably shouldn't have been doing what you were doing to make the mistake anyway. But apply it anyway, so the healing can begin...Blessings!

Prayer:
Father, I know I've made mistakes in life, but You've never turned Your back on me. You've covered me and healed me in ways I can't begin to explain. With Your love being active in my life, I realize I have a place to go for healing, with the comfort of knowing I don't have to make the same mistake again. You're an ALL PURPOSE God....I love You. Amen

Love Actually (Women)

Today's Passage: 1 Cor. 13:1-13
Memory Verse:1 Cor. 13:4-5

This Wednesday night, Pastor Chad was ministering about what a difference it makes when we approach what we do for God with passion rather than seeing it as an obligation. Not only are we exceedingly blessed, but there will also be the evidence of our relationship with Him. Which got me thinking: what kind of relationships would we have with our spouses if we actually loved with a passion rather than just out of an obligation?

Ladies, I'll be the first one to take the mask off and say we are often guilty of this. God has given us such a capacity to love. We are the ones who are the nurturers, who can take little or nothing and multiply it. And yet, when it comes to showing love to our husbands, we hold back in the very area we were meant to flourish. Why do we do it? Because we're waiting for our husbands to show us some sign that they are worthy of that passion.

We do carry a lot on our shoulders -- that is true. Many of us work outside the home as well as in ministry, then come to our homes knowing the work is not yet complete. So when it comes to performing acts of love, which the Word says is not to be done for selfish gain, we often wonder what's in it for us. We feel as though somehow we're being cheated of our share of the deposits in the love bank. If these thoughts are not checked and cast down, we will soon find ourselves dreading moments of intimacy that were meant to be fulfilling.

So, in the words of Pastor Chad, I ask again: what if we woke up everyday looking for ways to touch our husbands' hearts without expecting anything in return? What if we showed the longsuffering, kindness, humility, and -- dare I say it again -- passion in our marriage rather than seeing it as one more sacrifice we have to make just because God requires it of us? Before long, we will truly begin to see the BENEFITS of being married blooming everywhere. Due to the seeds of love we've planted (without strings attached, girls),we will receive the very things we're looking for: the attention, the tender words, flowers and candy for absolutely NO reason at all, and an equally passionate husband.

I submit to you that we don't HAVE to keep working at this marriage thing, doing all the work seemingly by ourselves; we GET to participate in the most blessed and sacred union ordained by the Father Himself. So ladies, what are you waiting for? Go find a way to show your man that he is THE MAN right now. That's my cue, folks...

Prayer: Father, You have given us women such a deep capacity to love. May we receive a revelation of just how contagious and fruitful that love is, bringing back into our lives a bountiful harvest of every seed planted and watered with passion. Empty us of the spirit of religiously "fulfilling our wifely requirements". Fill us with the passion to give more and meet our husband's needs like never before. And may You alone receive the glory for every couple our relationships inspire to do the same. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

Today's Passage: 1Cor.13:1-13
Memory Verse: 1Cor.13:13

Wednesday, February 10, 2010

Pastor Yassah opened this week with a reference to the upcoming Valentine's Day weekend. Most guys, if they're smart, are making plans to say "I Love You" in that special way. As we do ladies, please remember whatever sentiment comes your way pales in comparison to who you've been in our lives. No words, gifts, or candle-lit dinners will ever be able to measure up to who you are.....You can thank me later fellas!!!

Anyway, it does however remind me of the way I come into God's presence. See, on any Wednesday night or Sunday morning I try to bring all the gifts I can in order to impress God. I make sure I talk the right way, sing the right way, and look the right way, in the hopes that He would take pleasure in the "things" I've brought before Him. But am I REALLY pleasing Him? Isn't the expression of love supposed to be the "culmination" of sound behavior, obedience, prudent speech, and self-control displayed before He even gets the gifts?

What I mean is, if I chose to walk in strife, bitterness, rebellion, and unforgiveness with Yassah Monday through Thursday, and gave her the most beautiful roses in the world Friday, would she be able to see how much I truly love her? Not really! You see, because of those bad choices, the roses would be reduced to becoming a token from a life I'm only pretending to live. God loves our gifts, but He clearly said in His word (1Cor. 13) that even though we can speak like angels, prophesy, exercise faith, and feed the poor, it means nothing if our daily lives aren't filled with LOVE. Think about it Guys! We owe it to God, our wives, and ourselves!!!

Prayer:
Thank You Father for days that are filled with love. I realize today that You are love, and I cannot know love if I don't know You. Through You, I desire to make my wife feel the warmth of love everyday. The love within my marriage will go to new levels today, and it's all because of YOU! In Jesus' Name....Amen

Love In Action

Today's Passage: John 3:16
Memory Verse: John 21:15-17

Tuesday, February 9, 2010

In my line of work, I am often afforded the opportunity to talk about relationships. Whether it be Husband/Wife, Mother/Daughter, Father/Son, etc., maintaining a productive relationship with someone can be hard work. It can also be the most rewarding undertaking one can experience. Most people I talk to on the subject are at a loss for answers when the question is posed: Why don't relationships work, or why are they so hard to maintain? The answer is quite simple. They assess the value of the relationships by what they RECEIVE. What's wrong with that you ask, only one key fact......love gives!

Let's dismiss our perception of love for a moment and look at it the way God sees it. John 3:16 says "For God so loved the world that He GAVE....". Yes, that's right. The Almighty God left a blueprint of true love by giving. And He didn't give just anything, He gave His only Son. Imagine what our relationships would be like if we learned to love like this. Okay let's look at two key points for today:
(1) God gave His Son to the world. He gave His best to people who had done nothing but reject Him. Christians often make the mistake of judging the world. Meaning, we see them and instead of offering hope, we assign condemnation. (2) What God gave was a huge sacrifice. Can you imgaine? Not only do you have to give the most precious gift you have, you have to give it to someone who is currently rejecting you. Wow!

Now back to our relationships. What if we decided to demonstrate our love by giving hope, peace, kindness, gentleness, and charity? Can we truly change our world by loving others the way God demonstrated His love toward us? As you read today's memory verse, take note of the revelation Jesus was showing Peter. Try it today!

Prayer:
Father, I'd first like to thank You for loving me so much. I realize without You, true love wouldn't exist. I pray now for the wisdom and strength to love my family and neighbors as you have demonstrated, giving of my time and available resources. Give me a heart for the broken among us. For as I show them love, I am showing love to You as well. Let me find the strength to love in spite of my past. As I am seeking to please only You with every step I take. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

Today's Passage: John 3:13-18
Memory Verse: John 3:16

Love is in the air! A few days before Valentine's Day, you can see symbols of love everywhere: hearts, the color red, chocolates, teddy bears, and Cupid with his arrow, among others. Lovers will be expected to give one another things to show just how much the other person is loved. But as believers, our greatest example of love is Jesus Christ, who gave up Himself as the very best sacrifice for our sins. Because love is a giving word, we are expected to give our very best to our loved ones year round. Don't get me wrong -- the flowers and candy once a year are a nice gesture, but how much does it really mean if we're not showing that same love all the time?

The full measure of how much of a sacrifice love really is can be seen in what Christ did for us, knowing before the foundation of the world that we wouldn't readily accept His love. He decided to love us even while we were yet sinners (Rom. 5:8). Too often, our love is based on how much our spouse or children please us. I wonder just where we would be if Christ's love were that conditional. But praise be to God that He doesn't give up on us when we drop the ball, but continues to hold up His standard of love everyday that we live. May we be so steadfast and dedicated in our love walk.

Prayer: Father,if I praised You for the rest of my life, I would still never be able to adequately show my gratitude for what You did through Your Son for me. Let my willingness to walk out the same sacrificial love be a beacon of light to those who may not yet know Your love. Help me never to take Your sacrifice for granted, but keep it ever before me to remind me of what my love towards my spouse and children should look like. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

February 7, 2010

Today is Sunday. Yes, Sunday. The day sanctuaries all over the nation will be filled with people who are either filling their weekly morality quota, or on a mission to touch God. Today choirstands will be full of singers and pews full of spectators. And Pastors will be in their places ready to walk in "the call". Some will hope for a move of God. Some will hope God moves......out of the way! Nonetheless, all will be on one accord in that it's Sunday. Which means we know exactly what we'll be doing between the hours of ten o'clock and one o'clock. But what is the purpose for it all? Okay, I'll tell you....

Matthew 5:13 tells us that we are the "salt of the earth". We are God's seasoning (so to speak) for a dull and tasteless world. Which means God's purpose for us is out in the world where the broken are trying to find wholeness and meaning. I'm not criticizing going to church, I'm just saying let's be careful not to use "church-going" to dilute the true purpose of God. The salt on your dinner tables will do your food no good if it's not sprinkled onto the plate....or allowed to come "out of the box". God has given us permission to come out of the box by telling us to "GO" in His great commission (Matt 28:19).

So allow me to challenge you today. I challenge you to find a person who needs a little salt in their life. Offer them prayer, a warm hug, a delicious meal, or a listening ear. See, all these things add flavor to an otherwise tasteless circumstance. And it even makes going to church meaningful in that the more salt you sprinkle during the week, the more God will pour back into you on Sunday.

Have an awesome time at church!!!

Today's Passage: Psalm 27
Memory Verses: Ps. 27:13-14

A friend asked this question recently: why does it seem so easy for believers to lose heart or waver, and so hard for non-believers to come to the faith? I couldn't really answer the question at that moment, so I voiced it to God. He reminded me of the vast difference between the kingdom of darkness and the kingdom of light. Anyone who has a desire to follow Christ must lose his or her life in order to find it again; the enemy deceives his followers into thinking they are living when really they are dying.
Instant gratification is the main attraction in the kingdom of darkness: if you want it now, all you have to do is this, or that, and it's yours. But when we accept Christ, we're making a covenant to do things His way, and the one thing we must learn to do is WAIT. Nothing happens in a believer's life without walking through a PROCESS. When trials and temptations come, if we would only meditate on the promises of God, resolving to WAIT until He's done preparing us for whatever we're desiring, we will walk in constant victory.
Today, remember that God is the ultimate Father. He knows how best to bless His children, and as we wait on the best He has in store, He's developing strength, character, and our ability to minister to others. Be still, and WAIT only on Him.

Prayer: Father, like a little child I've asked why I can't have what You promised right away. Forgive me for being impatient, and help me re-focus on the purpose for which I was placed on this earth: to serve You and others first. May my praise be even stronger while I'm waiting, so that Your glory is revealed in me. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

Today's Passage: Joel 2:28-32
Memory Verses: Joel 2:28-29

To many, these last days seem so full of evil that there is nothing to look forward to. On the contrary, though, we have a promise from God that believers ought to be holding onto like never before. He says that He will pour out His Spirit upon all flesh; our sons and daughters shall prophesy. Old men shall dream dreams, and young men shall see visions. Also, upon His menservants and handmaidens He promises to pour out His Spirit as well.
Why is this important, you may wonder? The outpouring of God's Spirit is what we need to fuel this end-time revival. Acts 1:8 clearly says that we shall receive power when the Holy Ghost is poured out. This power convicts us to live holy, to share the Word with others, and to be the salt and light for a thirsty, dark world.
The outpouring was necessary to transform a roomful of terrified disciples into the bold witnesses we read about in the New Testament, and it's even more necessary now in the midst of subtle persecution.

Brothers and sisters, let's not let another waking moment go by without allowing God to pour Himself out on us. Furthermore, let's not allow another service in our churches where He is not welcome to dwell and inhabit our praises. As we take Him at His Word, we will see revival break out in our homes, workplaces, and most of all, among our children.

Prayer: Come, Holy Spirit. You're welcome in my life. Pour out Yourself all over and within me. Renew my heart, my thoughts, my intentions, and my actions. I make room for the will of the Father. Let the kingdom come and God's will be done always. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

Today's Passage: Joel 2:25-27
Memory Verse: Joel 2:25

There's a period in my life I often refer to as the "lost years". When I reflect back over that time, I see with great sorrow that they were years filled with selfishness and my futile desire to find happiness. What ended up happening, however, was that this happiness continued to elude me, while I lost my innocence as well as the dreams I had of being what God intended me to be.

Once I committed my life to the Lord, and began to walk the narrow road of surrendering it all to Him, I have had to fight the doubts sent by the enemy that those dreams will never be fulfilled. And that's where the Word and will of God comes in. Yes, Christ requires that we lay down our own desires and be consumed with His desire for us. Yes, at times it may seem as though what we want may never come to pass.

But God's Word assures us that not only does He have a plan to prosper and not harm us (Jer. 29:11), but He also is able to go into our past and restore the dreams that we lost when we lived for the enemy. So, as you lose yourself in Him, I encourage you to look forward to the new seasons of promise you will gain. One thing I know about my Father: He NEVER makes idle promises.

Prayer: Daddy, I love You today. I'm so glad You saw beyond what I did when I turned my back on You. Thank You for receiving me as Your child, then erasing my past as if it had never taken place. Furthermore, You've taken my original dreams and are in the process of bringing them to fruition. May the rest of my life always bring You glory. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

Today's Passage: Proverbs 6:16-19
Memory Verses: Prov.6: 16-17

Have you noticed how easy it seems for some people to take innocent lives? Day after day, we hear about how individuals from every age group are being murdered in unthinkable ways. We huff and puff in disdain at the news, spouting out quick judgments about what punishment we think they should receive. But a closer look at this passage, in which God tells us He hates those whose "hands shed innocent blood", suggests we may not be so innocent ourselves.

"Innocent" by its very definition means "not guilty", or "wronged without a cause". How many times have we shed the innocent blood of our brothers and sisters when we spoke evil of them, judging their actions by our intentions? Our tongues cut into their flesh in much the same way that a murderer's weapon slashes into the flesh of his or her victim. And whether we like it or not, we have to face the fact that God sees every type of pain inflicted as wrong. We must be willing to bring ourselves under the loving judgment of the Father, and change.

Prayer: Father, forgive me for the times I shed innocent blood when I used my mouth to backbite and spread evil about one of Your children. May my intentions as well as my words be to edify only and not to tear others down, for it is You Who always hear me. I need You to help me keep my lips from speaking guile, so that I may always please You. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

Today's Passage: Proverbs 6:12-19
Memory Verses: Prov. 6:16-17

In our society over the past few decades, a person's word has ceased to be his or her bond, and honesty is now regarded as a thing of the past. What has become acceptable in its place is "little white lies", which we all know are neither little nor pure. In my experience, everytime I've lied to cover up something I did that I didn't want someone to find out, I've had to tell another lie.

Being honest is very important to the Father because He knows that it would be easy to deceive even ourselves when we begin to habitually lie. You see, it may start with one lie, but it never ends there. satan is the father of all lies, and once we take on this habit, it quickly becomes part of our character, and before we know it, we've lost ourselves and our right standing with God. Psalm 51:6 says, "Behold, You desire TRUTH in the inward parts." God sees those places we try to hide from others, and it displeases Him greatly to hear us tell lies when He knows and sees what's truth.

May we always allow the Lord's light to shine in every corner of our hearts.

Prayer: Father, too many times I've lied to a friend or my spouse because I was more concerned about not getting them upset with me. I forget that my loyalty lies much more with You than with anyone else. You created me,and You are the One to Whom I will have to give an account. Help me to walk before You, first, in honesty. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

Today's Passage: Proverbs 6:12-19
Memory Verses: Prov. 6:16-17

When we walk closely with God, we begin to be sensitive to the things that please Him. One way to find out and make sure we're doing that is to read our Bible, which is our GPS (God's Positioning System).

In this proverb, God is not being vague about what He hates, but literally shares His heart with us on this matter. The first thing He talks about in this passage is "a proud look" (v.17). God doesn't want His children walking around as if we are holier or better than others just because we've chosen to walk in His ways. The quickest way to push away people who don't know Christ is to show them with our haughty attitude that they don't stand a chance of trying to be like us. If a proud look is what our Father hates, then humility is what He wants from us. Let's check our hearts and walk in humility today.

Prayer: Father, You know better than anyone that I have no reason to walk in pride. What You hate, then, is my attempt to pretend that I've never dealt with issues in front of those who may not know my past. May I reflect on just how low You stooped to deliver me from my sin, and keep a heart of humility ever before You. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
