Jesus Already Did It!!!!

Today's Passage>> Matthew 4: 1-11
memory Verse>> James 4:7

Anyone who knows and loves God knows that His Son Jesus was completely God even which He was completely man, living and walking on this earth. But He subjected Himself to the laws of the flesh so that He could walk in our shoes, knowing what it would be like to be tempted in all things and not give in by the power of the Holy Spirit. One question did occur to me, though. What if Jesus, Whose ultimate goal was to walk out the Father's will, DID give in to the enemy's attempts to tempt Him?

What if Jesus had allowed the temporary feeling of hunger pangs to overwhelm Him, and had given in when Satan tried to get Him to turn the stones into bread? When He was taunted, and His lordship put into question, what if He'd simply just jumped off that mountain? Of course the angels would've moved heaven and earth to keep Him safe. As for that last dare, I know there would've been no way Jesus would have bowed down to the mortal enemy of His beloved Father. But could you imagine how devastating the other two situations would've been?

To you and me, who've always lived in this flesh suit, it seems only a small thing for the enemy to convince Jesus to perform two insignificant magic tricks such as turning stones to bread, or jumping off a high place. But to the Lord, it would've been the ultimate betrayal of everything His Father placed in Him. That one decision would've sent the message to both the kingdom of light AND the kingdom of darkness that Jesus couldn't be counted on to bring salvation to the world. That would've totally destroyed God's plan, and then where would we be? Lost without any hope. And the enemy was just as aware of this as Jesus was. For this reason alone, Jesus HAD to resist him, knowing he would ultimately flee.

What does this mean for us? If Jesus, Who has been given dominion and power over all things, could depend on God's spirit to enable Him to withstand temptation, how much more should WE pull on every ounce of grace from God's throne to stand against the wiles of the enemy? Jesus went before us, walked it out, and did NOT give in. We don't HAVE to give in as if there weren't any evidence of how possible it is to be holy. But every single time we do, we give the devil permission to mess with our destiny, rendering us --and God's plan for using us-- completely ineffective. Follow the blueprint for resisting temptation: remind Satan of God's Words, then evict Him from your presence like the aggravating pest he is. Jesus already did it, remember? The answers to this test are already in The Book. We can't fail!

Prayer: Father, I thank You for sacrificing Jesus so that every temptation I face won't look so intimidating and impossible to overcome. I place myself under the blood of the Lamb, and declare the ability to resist the kingdom of darkness, causing every trap set for me and my brothers and sisters to be destroyed. For Your glory and in Jesus' Name, Amen.

Don't Panic---Praise!!!

Wednesday, August 31st, 2011

Today's Passage>> 2 Chronicles 20: 1-30
memory Verse>> 2 Chronicles 20:15

Picture this: you're going about your day, minding your own business as usual, when the phone rings. Normally, you wouldn't pay attention to the sound of the ringing, but today there's something different. Something inside you tenses even as you answer, because somehow you know this is not an ordinary call. When you finally bring yourself to answer it, you understand what the apprehension was about. It was the enemy attempting to fill you with panic and fear before you even got the news.

We all have received devastating news at one time or other that catches us off guard. I'm sure when King Jehoshaphat found out he was being forced to go to a battle for which he was extremely unprepared, his first instinct was to panic. But he did something that we can all learn a great deal from. He called his brethren, and they all decided to pray and seek the Lord. In the place of prayer, praise began to arise. Before long, God had received the sacrifice, and it was an acceptable one because it came from humble hearts that knew they could do nothing or turn to anyone else.

Today's passage reminds us that, unlike those in the world, we have something that we can use to translate us straight into the presence of our God. We have our praise. If you never knew this before, know this from here on out: our Father loves to hear praise. He loves to hear that we know HE is the only way, and that we're depending on no-one else but Him. And here's the other thing: when we're obedient to reach out to Him in prayer and praise, His ministering spirits respond to His command, and they are able to defeat the demonic forces that have lined themselves up against us.

This is the primary reason the enemy doesn't want you in all- out praise. He wants you in a state of panic and fear that ties the hands of the angelic host who fight for us. Why do you think, in moments of distress and bad reports, it takes everything we have have to press through and begin to give God praise? Because it's the enemy 's design. So what should our response be when faced with these unspeakable things? DON't be afraid. Don't panic. For the battle is not yours. I encourage you to get to the place where you begin to make praise as natural in your life as breathing. Whenever you're tempted to break down in fear, remember WHO your God really is. Watch Him open --and close-- doors in our lives.

Prayer: Father, You've never failed me yet, but already have an open door of escape out of every trap. Today, I say with Your creation that You ARE God in Whose Presence we stand whenever we need You. Thank You for the victory over every evil force. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

Your Mission...Your Victory!

Tuesday, August 30th, 2011

Today's Passage: Ephesians 6:10-18
Memory Verse: Luke 10:18-19

Alright, Agent enter your name here!, it's time for your briefing.  There have been demonic splinter cells breaking out all over the world infecting people with the disease of sin.  Your mission, if you choose to accept it, is to administer the antidote.  Be advised that the adversary is always at work.  His job is to make the people believe that the antidote is a myth.  He wants them to think it never existed.  So, you have your work cut out for you.  Now get ready......It's Go time!!!!!!

We all have been given this assignment.  Our mission was given to us when Jesus said "Go therefore and teach all nations; baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit"!  However, we allow the enemy to defeat us.  He gets the best of us by getting us all wrapped up in ourselves.  In a moment's time, we literally go from being on a mission, to being the mission.  Financial, marital, emotional, and health problems are sent as agents to "water down" the antidote Jesus gave us.  He knows if there's no antidote, there's no mission.  Some trade their serum for money or relationships.  Others use it to build names for themselves as if they're the ones that created it.

So what is it?  If we have the authority of being agents of God, what does the devil seemingly know that we don't?  I'll tell you.  He knows that the thing on the inside of us is greater than anything he has, or does.  He knows if we apply the weapons of this war, he has no chance of winning.  And he also knows this fight is fixed.  The antidote proves it.  He has already lost.  The only authority he has is what we give him.  Take time to study God's word in regards to the strength He's given you.  YOU HAVE TO KNOW WHO YOU ARE!!!!  The devil's attacks are dependent upon people not knowing themselves.  Why?  The reason is he can't CREATE anything, but he knows we can.  So, he needs you to use your words to create your false reality.  For example, if he wants to destroy a Godly marriage, he provides just enough aggravation to make the husband/wife "say" their marriage is bad, or over.  If he wants to  make one sick he just provides enough pain to make the person "say" they must have a virus, or cancer.  He wants you to forget that God said you are the head and not the tail.  He wants you to forget that the chastisement of our peace was upon Jesus Christ; and by His stripes we are healed.  See, if we said things like that in the midst of our adversity, the devil wouldn't have a leg to stand on.  Now go!  Don't forget your mission.  More importantly, always remember you carry the victory to every attack you'll face inside you.  So there's no need to fear.  It's Go Time!!!!

Prayer:  Father, we thank You for Your word.  We realize that we are complete in You.  And because of that, there's no need to be afraid of the devil and his tactics.  We are victorious in You.  So while on this mission, we serve notice to the devil that he's the one in trouble.  He's already fallen like lightning.  Our plan is to keep him there, in Jesus' name.  Amen.

Know Your Enemy!

Monday, August 29th, 2011

Today's Passage: Ephesians 6: 10-14; Isaiah 14: 12-14
Memory Verses: 2 Corinthians 10: 4-5

This week's journey of knowing who our enemy is must begin by getting a revelation of where he comes from, and where he resides. And in order to do this, I must employ the research of Dr. Cindy Trimm, author of The Rules of Engagement and Binding the Strongman. According to this woman of God, the kingdom of darkness that we are fighting against is not a physical one, but it IS real. It consists of a highly- organized form of government with Lucifer, the fallen angel, as the head, and his lieutenants of demonic forces who succumbed to his scheme of rebellion against the Most High God Himself.

The kingdom of darkness, although not a literal place, is referred to as "any territory or domain where there is an absence of God, revelation, divine purpose and destiny... It is accessible to both spirit beings and human beings who either visit or make their abode there" (Cindy Trimm, Binding the Strongman pp. 16-17). Although it is not a kingdom that can be seen with the natural eye, it manifests itself in the physical realm through the systems of the world: social, entertainment, environmental, economic, governmental, educational, technological, and religious (p. 10).

How does the enemy, who does not even have the authority to walk or wield power on this earth, seem to be in such control here? He uses his principalities (demons who are first in rank and order) who influence the affairs of humanity at a national level, mostly embodying world leaders who yield themselves completely to their control (eg. Hitler). Next, he uses the powers, or delegated authority, which affect and infect structures such as the five pillars of our societies: marriage, family, government, education, and church. He then uses the rulers of the darkness of this world: spirits which are responsible for blinding the minds of people to truth, and for facilitating sin, wickedness and iniquity within the nations. They also keep people in a state of darkness, affecting their thoughts, feelings and perceptions through mass media, music, movies, fashion, sports, philosophies and religious ideologies(pp. 20-23).

Next, he uses spiritual wickedness in high or lofty places, not just in the air but also in the minds of humanity. It operates in anything that is perverted, depraved, warped, or corrupt. Witchcraft, mind control and the occult are in operation here. In addition, the foo soldiers or demons are used to truly seduce mankind through the love of money, having been given the ability to distribute wealth. If you ever doubted the existence of any of these things, look around you: the kingdom of righteousness seems to be losing the popularity contest as people choose evil on a greater level daily. But there is still a remnant who have not bowed, and will not bow our knee to him. And not only that, but we will walk in holiness and righteousness, serving our Lord Jesus in total devotion, which ensures his defeat. If you don't know exactly who your enemy is, ask the Holy Spirit to reveal him to you, and never leave home without your armor again.

Prayer: Father, I thank You for saving me and allowing me access into the kingdom of light, where the enemy neither dwells nor has authority. May we as your people arise in our authority, defeating him by the way we love and live for you every day. And may Your name forever be exalted as his kingdom is destroyed. In Jesus' mighty name, Amen.

Prayers That Prevail

Today's Passage: Philippians 4:4-13
Memory Verse: Phil. 4: 5 & 13

Father in Heaven, who can we compare to You? Is there a god who can love like You? Is there one who'll give his all to us, or will sacrifice to save us? Let the praise of Your people declare "No one! There is no one like You Lord"! You formed the heavens and the Earth. You gave us life. And You gave us peace, hope, and joy. Your name is exceedingly great and awesome, and You are perfect in all Your ways.

Lord, cause us to show gentleness to each other. Remind us that we are all Your special children and therefore should be handled with gentle care. Let us not use harsh speaking, deceit, malice, or hatred toward each other. And let us bear each other's weaknesses as we do our own. Also, let us have self-control. To be more like You, we must be less like us. Having self-control allows us to be like You. Self-control keeps us from giving in to lust. It allows us to constantly be reminded to walk by the spirit, not the flesh. And temptation? You provided a way out of every temptation. All we have to do is seek Your will.

As we walk through this life, let us display the fruit of being totally devoted to You. Let it be a way of life, not just a nice thing to say. Father, You deserve all the love we can offer. But what You truly desire is obedience. Obedience tells You how much we love You. So as we enter into Your presence today, let all the fruits of Your spirit be at work in us. That's the moment we'll be truly one with You. And that's where we've wanted to be all along, in Jesus' name. Amen.

May We Be Found Faithful!

Today's Passage: Matthew 24: 29-51
Memory Verses: Matt. 24:46-47

When I first gave my life to the Lord, I remember saying on several occasions that I hadn't been exposed to the convicting power of Jesus' birth, death and resurrection until I was older. Well, the Holy Spirit brought back to my remembrance the youth camps I used to go to around the age of 11 or 12, if not even younger. He also allowed me to remember how the message of Jesus' return was ministered to me. It was, of course, in the easiest form for me to understand: in song.

I can't say for sure whether there were picture films accompanying songs on video back in those days, but I do remember as clearly as if it were happening right now that the song, called "I Wish We'd All Been Ready" by Cliff Richard, spoke of what would go on when the Rapture occurred. Just as it's written in today's passage, God spoke to the heart of a believer that people were going to need to be fed the uncompromising truth of what is to come. And that person obeyed, so effectively in fact that I was reminded of it so many years later. I realize that I really would have been without an excuse if my soul had been required of me back then, because I HAD heard the salvation message spoken in my language.

And isn't that what we're called to do? God reminds us that Christ's return is just as real today as it was when I was a child. Everyday life will attempt to drown out its reality, but we must not allow that to take place. Just as faithfulness was required in passing on the message that we'd better get ready,it is now and will be required of those of us who are believers today. The question is, will we be lulled to sleep by the spirit of deception that has blinded many?

It's not just a matter of staying saved and making it to heaven. It'll be all about remaining faithful and passing on the message of Christ's love to whomever will listen. What form will God allow YOU to put it in for those yet to be born? Will there be others like me who will have no excuse except to stand in awe of God's great love and faithfulness through your obedience? Be ready, for the Faithful true WItness stands at the door.

Prayer: Father, here I am. Just as You purposed for me to encounter You in a specials way at a young age, please help others do the same through the faithful ones You are planting on this earth. Give us all a heart for the lost like never before, and fill us with Your faithfulness to go to the ends of the earth. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

True Enlightenment

Friday, August 26th, 2011

Today's Passage: Ephesians 5: 6-21
Memory Verse: Eph. 4:32

In an age such as ours with all the technology and advancement in science that we've experienced, the word "enlightenment" is thrown around quite often. Many people think that just because they've been given the intellect to search out new ideas and think outside the box, not being content to accept the status quo when it comes to the human standard of living, this qualifies them as searchers of the "truth". The real truth is that truth and enlightenment come only when we are willing to accept our sinful nature and inability to pursue truth outside of the person of the Holy Spirit.

Let's look at this in a practical way by examining two relatively simple concepts which everyone, saved and unsaved alike, claims to possess: kindness and goodness. On the surface, it doesn't seem to take much to be kind or good to someone. A simple smile or wave in the direction of a complete stranger who may be having a bad day could go a long way, and it often does. It's even become more and more common in our society to make charitable donations in the form of money or possessions for the purpose of trying to make life easier for those who are incapable of accomplishing this for themselves. And so, many individuals as well as corporations who don't even claim to live for Christ are to be commended for making a huge impact on our world.

But what happens when the "touchy-feely" element is taken away, and a person is faced with having to choose between sacrificing for others and self-preservation? Where do those sappy thoughts and emotions go when one is threatened with death, or at the very least, starvation? What happens when someone's loved one is brutally beaten, raped, or murdered, sometimes by someone else who knew that person on an intimate level? Where does the general idea of "goodwill to all men" go? Straight out the door -- if Christ is not the center of a person's life, and even then, it depends on how much of that person's will is surrendered to Him. This is where the whole concept of being enlightened really makes a difference in the inner parts of a human being. When darkness threatens to take over as a result of tragic events (which is the enemy's plan, by the way), the light of Christ chases it away, reminding the believer of God's promises to those who don't give in to those feelings of hate and retaliation. Without the voice of God, renewing our minds daily, there is no resistance to evil, and it simply takes over.

That's how come a perfectly sound person, who was always "kind" and "good" at one time, becomes capable of shooting his or her own children, or drowning them in a river. Let's bring it home to where you and I live. As soon as our comfort zone is threatened, or we feel the least bit of discomfort, treating others with kindness and goodness is the first thing to go. There is absolutely no way fallen man can walk in kindness and goodness outside of asking God to live in us DAILY, being open to rethinking what we THOUGHT we knew about how to treat others. When we walk in that light, Jesus can be the model we live by, because He Who knew no sin allowed all manner of cruel things to be done to Him so that we could do the same. With this in mind, we can reach out to help others, and treat them better than we even treat ourselves although it makes us uncomfortable. We can give up our rights to want service, and serve others instead. And that, my friends, is true enlightenment.

Prayer: Father, I've learned over the years of my life that I cannot walk in kindness and goodness outside of You and what Your Son Jesus did. Even on my best days, every attempt I make to be kind and good to others comes from You. So I give You the glory now for it all, and ask You to change the parts of me that I have not allowed You to change in the past so that it is YOU alone people see every minute of my time on this earth. I love and adore You, and will always live totally devoted to You. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

Praise God for Patience!!!

Thursday, August 25th, 2011

Today's Passage: Romans 2: 1-16
Memory Verses: Rom. 2: 3-4

For those of us who think the topic of the fruit of the Spirit is something too well-known and obsolete to be relevant to today, this blog is for you. For the past couple of years, God has really done a work with my patience, especially where my children are concerned, To top it off, He's been ministering to me in such a personal and supernatural way everytime I get in His presence. Tuesday night is another prime example of how in touch with us God really is, bringing us from glory to glory as we allow ourselves to obey Him more and more.

So I go to sleep after an awesome night of ministry at praise choir rehearsal (we've officially stopped calling them "rehearsals" because of how mightily the Lord moves in our midst), and wake up on just Day 2 of being back at school, only to discover that someone has taken the well-ordered world I dreamed of all summer long and flushed it down the drain. My resolution to get to school on time begins to fade as I go back and forth with my 9-year-old son, who's been given an assignment that he didn't really read properly. Now he's lost the sheet with the instructions on it, and he can't seem to understand that I'm getting even more upset by the fact that he's not seeming to care if it's done right or not.

Needless to say, I lose it. By the time it's all said and done, my voice (which I was determined not to raise over 2 inches since I had planned to walk in gentleness and kindness from a blog or two ago) is 90 decibels too high, and he's in tears. Desperately, I cry out to the Lord to forgive me for allowing myself to lose my patience. I KNOW I'm not perfect, but it seems so difficult not to set a high standard for my children to follow. Finally, I'm ready to accept the fact that, as long as I'm in this flesh suit, I'll always need to be reminded to walk in the Spirit, and I'll always need His help in producing His fruit.

Finally, I see all over again how awesome God is, since He's perfectly perfect in all things, yet He holds back His wrath even when we go astray. I realize how easy it would be for Him to "lose it", especially with those who gave their lives to Him in the past but turned away, not having had the faith to finish the race. And as I get back into my place of humility once again, remembering not to judge those who don't seem to have it all together yet (including myself), I say a prayer for my brothers and sisters who need God's loving Hand to guide them home. How blessed we are that He's a patient God!

Prayer: Father, although the lesson of needing patience is not an easy one, I thank You that You take the time to teach it to me. At my most miserable moments, when I think I have nothing to work on, You remind me that I haven't arrived yet. I just want to ask for forgiveness once again for having such a short memory, for it was not too long ago that You exercised patience when You waited for me to respond to Your lovingkindness. I ask You now to continue to draw the ones who've not yet responded to You, praying that the Holy Spirit will draw them just like He did me. And the glory will be all Yours. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

The Dual Nature of Peace

Wednesday, August 24th, 2011

Today's Passage: Matthew 10: 16-42
Memory Verses: Matt. 10: 34-36

There are two sides to this idea called peace that we don't talk about often. Just like with freedom, peace is obtained by literally doing the opposite: engaging in warfare. It's interesting how from the time He was born, the Prince of Peace Himself was surrounded by violence. His parents spent the first three years of His life fleeing from murderers who wanted to destroy Him so that the prophecy would not be fulfilled.

Even when He became a grown man, everywhere Jesus went was not peaceful. As a matter of fact, about the only time He experienced peace was when He stole away to spend time with His Father. Other times were filled with loud outbursts, fiery arguments and angry crowds. For the sake of the gospel of peace, God already told us in His Word that the kingdom of heaven must suffer violence due to the principalities and powers, rulers of darkness and spiritual wickedness in high places that surround us.

With this in mind, what's our attitude to be? Do we just sit idly by and meekly accept the persecution that is thrown at us like tornados on a daily basis? The Antichrist spirit entered into the world from Jesus' birth, doing its best to stamp out the message of salvation. So what do WE do? We, who are called to fight the good fight of faith? Do we play the role of the sheep that are silent when they go to the slaughter, just like Jesus did, or do we refuse to accept the stereotype we've been given of weak, spineless and ineffective people who make no impact on this world?

We look to the Word and hear with our spirits what The Spirit is saying to the church today. Be wise as serpents and innocent as doves. Walk in peace by not being the source of strife and confusion. Let us not be the ones spreading slander and self-righteous judgment on others to make ourselves feel more secure. Instead, we must be CONSUMED with the message of the gospel of peace, sharing God's love wherever we go. But when that antiChrist spirit rears its ugly head, we must be alert to it, recognizing the violence as the enemy's way of trying to bully us into running and hiding. But the peace of God that passes all understanding will guard our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus, stopping any attempts from the enemy to bring a negative witness against His kingdom. So if you're confused about the dual nature of peace, just remember: we WALK in peace with God and man, but we wage war against the enemies of God and man, no matter what form they may take.

Prayer: Father, Your Word says You teach my hands to war and my fingers to fight. This does not mean You are NOT a God of peace. On the other hand, You are calling us to defeat the spirit of this age which would have us all bound so that we won't draw others to Christ. Please arise in us that we may walk in peace with one another even while destroying the works of the kingdom Of darkness. In Jesus' mighty Name, Amen.

Count It All Joy!

Tuesday, August 23rd, 2011

Today's Passage: James 1:1-8
Memory Verse: James 1:3

Joy: of great delight; the source or cause of keen pleasure. Many confuse it with "being happy". However, being happy has nothing to do with having joy. For instance, almost anything, depending on how you're feeling at the time, can make you happy. In its defense, happiness feels really good.....while you're feeling it. It is the immediate response to a positive occurrence. The problem is, it doesn't usually last very long, does it?

Joy, on the other hand, is more sustaining. It doesn't have to have somebody like it, or pay it attention. Joy doesn't have to have money or flashy possessions. As a matter of fact, joy is NOT situational at all. It's not even an emotion. Joy is a lifestyle. It's an assurance. You see, one has to have something they perceive as "good" happen to them in order to experience happiness. In contrast, the person that has joy has it because they are content in whatever situation....even bad ones. Want proof? Here it is. The Bible says in James to count it all joy even when you fall into diverse trials. What? Is God serious? I'm supposed to have joy in the midst of a trial? Well, yes!

Remember, joy is not happiness. It's not an emotion. The premise is, if we really know God, we know He loves us and has good will toward us. Therefore, if He allows trials to come into our lives, it doesn't mean He's trying to destroy us. It must mean He's trying to strengthen us. Let's dig a little deeper into the passage. It says to "count it all joy when you fall into diverse trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience". Aaahh! There it is. If we have joy, trials in our lives produce patience. If we're happy, trials in our lives produce....well, sadness. That's why God wants us to have joy. Joy produces things we'll need for the next level of life. It makes us more mature.

Now, I'm not saying you shouldn't allow yourself to experience happiness. My point is to warn you to not confuse it with joy. If you do, you'll end up using happiness as motivation for some important decisions (i.e. relationships, jobs, relocating, etc). Also, you should remember joy cannot be found in a situation. It can only be found in the Lord. Knowing He has control of your life provides a security the world will never be able to take away. And that, my friends, you can count on!

Prayer: Father, You are the source of my joy. I don't have to have a lot of money in the bank, or lots of friends around me, to experience this knowing in my heart that You're all I need. The security of knowing You makes it possible for me to look uncertainties in the face and declare victory. Thank You for filling me with something that can never be taken away from me. As long as You are there, I'll never run out. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

How Deep is Your Love?

Monday, August 22nd, 2011

Today's Passage: Mark 12: 28-34
Memory Verse: Mark 12:30

What do you do when you've done everything you know to do while on this journey, taking heed to the Word and positioning yourself to be used by God on a greater level, only to keep coming up against opposition and strife? How do you handle being the object of unfair judgment although you know in your heart you're walking upright before the Lord, perhaps more closely than ever before? The way you do that is remember that although we are IN this world, we're not OF it. Therefore, in order to keep yourself in line with the kingdom of God, you must live in preparation for heaven, where our real home is.

In a world where the focus is me- centered, we are raised to believe we have rights. We walk around with a sense of entitlement even in the kingdom. Although we make mistakes and hurt others, expecting them to forgive us based on our intentions, we are offended-- sometimes even outraged-- when we have to endure harsh words from others. Today's passage wants us to be reminded that He expects us to be GOD-focused, which changes our mindset from the worldly perspective. Above all, we are required to see God as The Only One whom we are to love and worship, but not just in any old way.

Our love for God must come from the same place where all our passions previously arose. We must love Him so deeply that whatever sacrifice He requires of us should be worth the cost. So deeply, in fact, that when He says "let go of that past hurt", we want to please Him more than we care to hold on to that grudge. We should love to the point where our Father's Word takes priority over everyone else's. So when He says, "Love your enemies; do good to them that hate you, and pray for those who despitefully use you", our task is to obey because we know God has a plan to use that love. Moreover, we should be moved to do those things because only His love will follow us to Heaven-- not our great accomplishments or personal opinions of others.

Today, rather than focus on what you have to give up because of Your love for the Father, know that every act of love is recorded in the heavens. And when we love God more deeply than our own desires, He gives us a love for our neighbor (fellow man) that allows us to plant seeds of light that will point those who don't even know God to Him. That's why we can NEVER please God by retaliating when people hurt us. He's too concerned about the negative impact it will have on those who haven't yet given their hearts to Him. I guess the question of the day is, "How deep is your love?" And the answer to that would be, "It depends on how much of me I'm willing to let God have."

Prayer: Father, I love You with my whole heart, mind, and strength. My life's goal is to pursue Your Will for my life-- even if it leads me to places where I may not understand what You're doing. I consume Your Word and commit to obey, because ultimately all things work together for the good of all who are called to live big for You. As I live out my love for You, may Your love ooze out of me to others. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

Today's Passage: Revelations 21
Memory Verse: Revelations 21:4

God, our Father, we acknowledge You as the Giver of Life, the Lover of our Souls, and the Lifter of our Heads. We ask that Your kingdom be made manifest on Earth, just as it is in Heaven. We, God, are the generation that will give You praise whereever we go. As we seek Your glory, we're committed to walk in total devotion to You and only You. With You as our guide, we will never need anything from this world. We choose to seek only what You have provided.

Father, our ultimate desire is to be "at home" with You. We realize we're only here to be the extension of Your hands. Our mission is to share Your love with everyone who doesn't know You. Your heart is to have Your mansions filled with the souls of Your beloved. All who adore You will worship around Your throne one day. Until then, let us continue to be Your image; reflect Your nature. Let us actively pursue You through right-living and love for the broken. Pursuing You is the most important thing we can do. Because, in Your presence, there is everything we need. You said in Your word You'll wipe every tear from our eyes. Death will be gone, tears gone, crying gone, and pain gone. Only an awesome God like You can do that. I'm so glad we're Yours. And just in case we aren't Yours, 'Father here's our white flags, we surrender right now'! We will love and adore You always, in Jesus' name...Amen

Today's Passage: Colossians chapter 3
Memory Verse: Col. 3: 2

Ten years ago, certain words were only heard on Rated "R" movies. It was unheard of to turn on a talk show and be bombarded with so much foul language as we see being used today. Now, even Prime Time channels that used to be watched by the whole family have to be blocked off so that those who really care what their children are being exposed to don't have to worry about them hearing the vulgar words. But herein lies the issue. Even those of us, who SHOULD be watching over the fragile spirits of ourselves and our children, are becoming desensitized to the filth coming from the television screen nowadays.

In the face of eternity, knowing that Christ is soon to come, we've been discussing the importance of setting our gaze on home. So how do we actually do that? Today's passage suggests that, unlike some who think we should be collecting ammunition in order to fight against the government or something to that effect, we should be looking WITHIN and not WITHOUT. We shouldn't fail to pray for God to draw others to the cross, of course, or assemble ourselves as we see the day approaching. But more importantly than all of that, we must condition and prepare our hearts to make the transition to heaven.

Paul begins by reminding us that we must render inactive the fleshly passions that control those in the world. Remember my reference to television programs? We can see that foul language and sexual innuendos have flowed over into even the parts of society that we used to refer to as "respectable": the church-going segment of our culture that used to be uncomfortable with vulgarity in ANY form. Now, all the lines have been made blurry, and the one religion that's being preached is the religion of self: whatever you want to do or believe in, you should have the freedom to do and believe in without anyone trying to persuade you otherwise.

But then Paul goes deeper than the things we see on television to the real issues of the heart -- things only God can see. We must begin to tear our hearts and not just our outer garments. We need to spend time praying and fasting to see a move of God like never before, a move in which He comes and delivers us from the anger, secret lusts, lies, and unforgiveness that threaten to pull us from the close relationship God wants to maintain with us. In place of those things, we must begin to practice compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience, peace, forgiveness, and most of all, love. After all, are these not the things that will rule our hearts when we get to heaven? No wonder God is so adamant about us walking in them down here -- before the trumpet sounds. No matter what the condition of your heart right now, I encourage you to draw closer to the Lord and keep asking Him to change you until your walk brings glory to His Name and prepares you as well as others for the coming of the Lord. In short, live every day as if it were your last on this earth.

Prayer: Father, You have done everything You needed to do to prepare us for eternity. There have been times when our focus has not been on You and the sacrifice Jesus made for us. But we turn our hearts now towards Your face and Your plans for us. Refiner's fire, refine us and purify us until we reflect Your awesome glory. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

No Drive-Throughs Here!!!

Today's Passage: John 6: 25-58
Memory Verse: John 6:27

There's something inside of all of us that seems to gravitate towards everything in this realm: the tastes, sounds, sights, touch, and smells of this world.  From the time we're born, we seem to be forever reaching for them to satisfy us.  It's amazing how even an infant knows he or she's no longer automatically getting nourishment from the mother inside the womb; he or she now has to find it.  So we learn to cry until we get that physical sustenance that we seem to crave.

Even in the church, which you'd think would be the last place to see this manifest, just watch our response when we're talking about a spiritual concept.  The heads are nodding, and the eyes are on the speaker, focused on what's being said.  At that very moment, we're being fed the spiritual food mentioned in today's passage.  And yet, something else happens when physical food is mentioned.  Eyes light up, you hear a few hoops and hollers in the sanctuary, and genuine, heartfelt smiles are seen.  What is it about things of this world, like food, that make them so easy to crave?  Why is it so hard to approach spiritual things with the same enthusiasm?

It's the instant gratification, folks.  I thought it was some deep spiritual concept, but not so.   When we think of all the spiritual things we have to have to make this walk a success -- faith, love, hope, peace, joy, righteousness, godliness, etc. -- we can't drive by some brightly-lit building, bark out some instructions at the angels, throw money in, and pull up to a window only to drive away with our spiritual order... or can we?  Actually, it really doesn't work the same way things do when we're experiencing cravings for physical food.  However, the Father uses His own blends of herbs and spices to gently draw our attention to our need for these things in our lives.

It's the sweet aroma of a life surrendered to the Lord that we truly long for.  It's just the whole idea of waiting for our own virtues to be lovingly simmered over time in God's Holy Ghost Crockpot that gets us all impatient.  Just because it's not instant doesn't mean it's not going to be just as satisfying if we're patient enough to allow it to be served with His grace and mercy.  Working up a hearty spiritual appetite yet?  I hope so... because this food doesn't just pass through your system and leave without a trace.  It attaches itself to your life, and others can then smell that same aroma that drew you when your life was a mess without Christ.  We just have to be willing to wait a little while longer.  Remember, there are NO drive-throughs in the kingdom!

Prayer: Father, even as we make our way through this world with its appetites and tastes, we desire You.  We long to receive the infilling and indwelling of Your Spirit, keeping us from craving the things of this world.  Your Son Jesus promises that He is the Bread of Life, and that whoever comes to Him will never hunger nor thirst.  May His Bread fill us, and overflow into the lives of others forever.  In Jesus' Name, Amen.

You Gotta Know!!!

Today's Passage: Matthew 22:23-33
Memory Verse: Matthew 22:29

Are you growing in the Word of God? Are you striving to know more everyday? People often say "what they don't know, won't hurt'em". But we know nothing can be farther from the truth. This statement, in fact, is another example of the world's skewed view of life. In contrast, the Bible says people perish for lack of knowledge. In essence, what you don't know can in fact hurt you.

What do you think the biggest weapon in the devil's arsenal is? It's deception. He takes pride in deceiving people. He's been doing it since he spoke to Eve in the garden of Eden. He has an incredible knack for lacing God's truth with his lies. He has to do that to make what he says believable. Thankfully, God has given us a remedy. He gave us knowledge. The more you know, the more you reduce your chances of being deceived. The devil is a crafty liar. But that's all he is; a liar. Meaning, the ability to tell the truth is not in him. He'll tell you a loved one is sick unto death, when God has already healed them. He'll tell you your troubled marriage is over, when healing is only a prayer away. He'll tell you you can't do something that God has already prepared you to do. He'll even tell you you're a nobody, when God has fearfully and wonderfully made you somebody. But, if you don't know God's truths, how can you stand against the devil's lies?

In today's passage, the Sadducees tried to trick Jesus by asking Him a religious question. Some people will always try to find savvy ways to question your faith. The question they asked was in regard to Moses' law concerning death and marriage. After asking the question, Jesus' response was this: "You don't know your Bible, and you don't know how God works" (Matt. 22:29 Msg). See, they thought they were going to trick Him into saying the wrong thing, or siding with their religious traditions. But Jesus had knowledge. You can have it too. Don't let the devil trick you. What God says is yours, is yours. Don't let him cause you to question what you believe. Study God's word. The Bible says we should meditate on it daily. That's what brings knowledge. I don't know about you, but when I'm up against the devil and he's trying to feed me his lies, I can't counteract his games by "thinking" I know....I gotta know.

Prayer: Father, You have so graciously given us the best part of You. You gave us Your word. Your word is a lamp to our feet, and a light to our pathway. We couldn't see our way through this life without it. The more of Your word we uncover, the brighter our path gets. And that keeps us from falling into the traps of the enemy. Thank You, Lord. Thank you for wanting to know us, and allowing us to know You....in Jesus' name. Amen

Today's Passage: Matthew 18: 1-17
Memory Verse: Matt. 18:4

In the heartwarming song by Kevin Lavar called "A Heart that Forgives", there's a part that says, "Just like little children playing on the playground, one minute they're fighting and the next they're laughing... Teach us to have a heart that forgives" [paraphrased]. There's something about children that's so refreshing. They're incapable of holding a grudge for long. No matter how mad they get over something that's been said or done to them, their short-term memories push those thoughts out almost as quickly as they go in. I can't give the scientific explanation for this, but I do know that this is the mindset God wants us to have if we want to see Jesus.

As believers, it's very easy for us to accept the parts of our walk where we get to walk in power and authority, telling the devil where he does and doesn't belong. We're even okay with having to go through for a little while as long as we know it's going to pass soon, and that God's blessings and favor will always be with us. But for some reason, we have a hard time letting go of hard feelings towards one another for past offenses. Well, today's passage tells us that we DON'T have the option of deciding whether or not we will walk in peace with our brothers and sisters.

Not only does God expect us to walk in peace, but He also wants us to walk in the same humility that children do, establishing the fact that it's not all about us. Furthermore, the Word tells us that we will NOT enter the kingdom if we use any of our members to sin, or cause others to do the same. On the other hand, He doesn't want us to ignore conflicts, either. He wants us to address them as they come up, so that resentment and bitterness do not creep in. So what is our H.U.M.P Day challenge? We've got some soul-searching to do. Have our alliances been spiritually sound? Have we stirred others up to want to serve the Lord even more, or is there a breach somewhere as a result of something we've said or done?

Remember, our goal is to get Home, and Father knows what He wants the condition of our hearts to be in order to get us there. Today, find someone that you may have had a misunderstanding with in the past. Ask to have an intimate talk with them (with one or both of your pastors there). Expose the issue(s) that have kept you alienated from that person, and don't stop until restoration has replaced the resentment. Let God's children play together again, laughing much with no malice... Only His love. Have a blessed H.U.M.P. Day!

Today's Passage: Matthew 13
Memory Verses: Matt. 13: 2 & 3

For the past few weeks, we've been learning how to resist the urge to complain and keep our minds on the Kingdom of God.  What causes us to complain, however, is the spirit of lust.  The spirit of lust is not just an access to sexual perversion, it is the spirit that deceives us by making us think we're living in "lack".  Once it does that, we in turn complain to God and make Him feel His care of us is inadequate.

We must remember we are pilgrims on a journey.  In that, investing in things that solidify our placement in this world is not what our purpose should be.  Everything we are and everything we have should provide access to that upward call that's been on our lives since the day we received Christ as our Savior.  So what then are we striving for?  Should we NOT want to live in a nice home, or drive a nice car?  Of course not.  In fact, God wants you to "prosper as your soul prospers".  We just shouldn't make those things our goal and mission.  God said in Matthew chapter 6: "If I clothe the flower in the field, how much more will I do for you"?  Later,  He advises us to seek His kingdom first, and in doing so, He'll add everything to our lives we need.

Seek God's kingdom first?  Which way do I go and what should I be looking for?  First, Jesus is the way.  That's right!  It's not north or south, east or west.  In fact, it's not even a "where", it's a "how".  Jesus' life has already blazed the trail that leads to God's kingdom.  All you have to do walk like He walked, love like He loved, and say what He said.  What we should be looking for (on any journey as a matter of fact) are signs.  In Matthew chapter 13, Jesus spoke several parables that turned out to be descriptions of God's kingdom.  He did so because He not only wanted the people to hear words, He wanted them to see signs.  The message in the parables were all the same.  If you see and/or display these characters (signs), you're on your way toward the Kingdom of God.  Now get going....let's meet each other there!

Prayer: Father, You've left a pretty specific set of blueprints for my life that will lead me straight to Home, the place You and Your Son are preparing even now for me.  I pray today that I will read the "signs" You've left and follow them to the letter, not with a religious attitude, but with passion and pursuit of a close relationship with You.  As the end times come closer, and You call Your children HOME, help me be ready so that I can stand before You blameless, just like You intended.  In Jesus' Mighty Name, Amen.

Bringing Home to Earth

Monday, August 15th, 2011

Today's Passage: Matthew 16: 13-28
Memory Verses: Matt. 16: 18-19

More than ever before, we have access to the Word of God.    Every year, more and more versions of the Bible have been made available to the people of God.  All our wonderful technology that allows us to be in planes as well as in remote mountain areas gives us no excuse not to have the revelation we should about our place in God.  And yet, many believers are still as defeated as in the season when the Bible was only accessible to a select few... The period in history known as the Dark Ages.

People who have no knowledge of the things of God think that secular knowledge brings enlightenment, when what it does is drive us further from God into even more darkness.  But the amazing thing that I CAN say about the world is at least they seek knowledge.  Many believers do not establish a daily time to read and hear God's Word except bits and pieces which they maybe hear at church.  But God promises us that those who allow the Word to take root in our hearts will reap up to a hundredfold harvest.

With that in mind, God wants us to bring Him glory by bringing home --God's kingdom-- to this earth.  And one of the ways we do that is by walking in authority against the forces of darkness.  What better way to walk in victory over God's only enemy than by learning what defeats him, then doing exactly that.  What the enemy does is keep us focused on the mundane things that surround us.  He keeps us distracted just enough to ignore how powerful we really are.  And everytime we catch a glimpse of God's glory, He reminds us that we are His, and everything He purchased belongs to us outright.

Today, honor God and defeat His enemy by walking in every ounce of authority you've been given.  Fight the good fight of faith, knowing that none of our labor will be in vain.  No more laying down and listening to the lies of the enemy.  No more wasting time complaining about the way things are, when we can bind the enemy's hand and loose God's promises into our lives.  You ARE the anointed of God, and you HAVE been called to uproot and tear down every stronghold in Jesus' Name.  That's how you bring Home to earth.

Prayer: Father, I'm so grateful today that You didn't save us then leave us on our own to fight against the enemy of our souls.  You promised us that the gates of hell would not be able to stand against Your church.  We stand now on Your Word and commit to walking in the full authority of Your kingdom.  We declare defeat to Satan and his demonic forces, and employ the angelic host to overpower them now in Jesus' Name.  And all the glory will always be Yours.  In Jesus' Name, Amen.

Prayers that Prevail

Today's Passage: 1 Timothy chapter 13
Memory Verses: 1 Tim. 13: 14-15

Father, You have pricked our hearts concerning Your desire to let us know what You want our focus to be. You've convicted and drawn us to the fact that we must not be consumed with worldly lusts. Our sole ambition should be to grow closer to You and Your Son, Jesus.

For this reason, our prayer is that You fill our hearts and minds with thoughts of Your promises for this life and beyond. We have been almost brainwashed and enticed by the god of this world to be attracted to the things of this world. Lack of the very things you require of us-- self- denial, taking up our cross, and following You with abandonment-- causes us to be de-sensitized to the sights, sounds, and actions of the kingdom. We are taught to serve the Lord, and live so as to see You in heaven one day. But distractions, dreams of success, and immature desires cause us to be nearsighted and only focused on those things.

Today, we pray for a flood of Your Spirit to break us and bring us to the place where our hearts are broken by the things that break Your heart. May our ultimate goal be to bring more souls into Your kingdom. May we never be afraid to stand for You, but walk in such a way that we impact this world and give no-one an excuse for not knowing Who You are. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

Keep Your Heart Pure

Saturday, August 13th, 2011

Today's Passage: Hebrews  chapter 13
Memory Verse: Heb. 13:5

There's an account in Acts chapter 5 about a man and his wife who were members of the church which began as a result of the boldness given to the apostles.  Without even having to be told to do so, those who had been blessed by receiving the Word from the apostles began to sell what they had and bring the proceeds to them so that no-one would be in lack.  It says in the previous chapter that they all decided to do this on their own, but this particular couple conspired to deceive the apostles.

After selling their property, Ananias and Sopphira kept back some of the money they had gotten and took the rest to the apostles.  Immediately, Peter discerned that they had lied, and in the end, they both lost their lives.  Before they died, Peter asked the husband, "Why did you decide to lie to the Holy Spirit in this way?  Did the property not belong to you BEFORE you decided to sell it?" This is the question that I asked myself as well when I read this story.

Why would someone who was not coerced to make such a sacrifice go to such great lengths to hold it back?  The same reason a church administrator would attempt to steal money from the tithes and offerings of hardworking people, or a believer who wants to be blessed would still hold back his/her tithe and/or offering because that person thinks this is the best way to prosper.  It doesn't matter how big or small the offense; it's all about what's in the heart.

The questions God is asking us today will either convict us of the love of money, or prevent us from the danger of ever being in this place spiritually.  First, do we really trust God, or are we willing to do whatever it takes to look out for ourselves?  Second, what is our focus?  Is it the advancement of the kingdom, or the advancement of our own goals?  Third, do we really think God doesn't know what's IN our hearts, and what our true intentions are?  Not only can He discern between our intentions and our actions, but He also controls the level to which we can walk in blessings.  The main thing we prevent when we compromise in this way, however, is our ability to impact the kingdom in a powerful way.  Sure, we may be able to save a few dollars with our selfish actions, and God's grace may prevent us from dying on the spot, but the only ones we shortchange are ourselves and the ones God ordained us to reach.  May we all walk in obedience in this area so that God's full blessings and purpose manifest in our lives.

Prayer: Father, never before have I been so aware of the fact that You see the heart of man.  Thank You for extending Your mercy when I've fallen short of Your glory.  But more than that, thank You for encouraging me to stand for everything that brings You glory, including giving it all so that there's no lack in Your house.  May my heart always seek to advance Your kingdom.  In Jesus Name, Amen.

Be Content

Today's Passage: Philippians 4
Memory Verse: Psalms 23:1 (Mess)

If you were to take inventory of your life, what would your final assessment be?  Would you say you have enough?  Would you say you need more of this or more of that?  Would you say life's been good, or a series of messes?  I'll venture to say from any angle you look at it, the "good" or "bad" in your life had a purpose.  And whether it served its purpose or not is based on your perception.

How can a wealthy man say "I have nothing"?  How can a mother say "I have no accomplishments"?  These things happen because people assess their lives through the world's perspective.  Truth is, anything achieved outside the will of God is fleeting.  Meaning, the emotionality that comes from it doesn't last long.  A friend of mine got a new car for Christmas back when we were in high school.  Before driving it, he'd just stare at it and say "This is all I ever wanted".  Less than 2 years later, he was kicking it, yelling at it, and trying to get rid of it. God warns us about placing our hopes in temporal things.  He wants us to be content.  It hurts Him when we assess value to our lives only when we acquire worldly things.  In our passage, Paul told the Philippians "Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am to be content".  In my opinion, that statement freed Paul from the world's economic labels.  Paul's faith told him there is no rich and no poor, only contentment with whatever God provides.  If we buy into the labels, we'll soon make them our strive and passion.  We'll ignore God's holy plan for man's wealthy plan.  We'll lose sight of the fact that God will give us the power to gain wealth, if we'll completely trust Him.  So it's not a sin to believe God for more.  God wants you to prosper in life.  He doesn't want you to need.  We just have to understand God gives us what we need at the time we need it.  There's no need to be impulsive.  If you want a spouse, God knows and will provide.  Wait for Him.  If you need more money, God knows and will provide.  Wait for Him.  His plan will bring financial prosperity without the sorrow.  So, be content with where you are and what you have.  Afterall, if the Lord is your shepherd......you don't need a thing!

Prayer: Father I thank You for the excellent way You take care of me.  I have learned to be 'content with the manna".  Forgive me for the times I've complained and not appreciated You.  From now on, I'll treat You like the Shepherd and provider You truly are, in Jesus' name. Amen

Contentment in Sickness

Thursday, August 11th, 2011

Today's Passage: 2 Corinthians 12:1-10
Memory Verse: 2 Cor. 12:10

We're taught to speak faith no matter the situation.  We're encouraged to believe that we need to take the Bible as the actual Word of God, and TAKE Him at His Word.  While this is true, though, we see so many people who endure serious illnesses.  Many of those people are believers who have not compromised in one way or another.  Does this mean that God gave them His promises for healing, then changed His mind about what He meant for His children to have access to?

Today's passage tells us that no, God is not schizophrenic.  He does, however, have a specific plan for us that involves us having to put up with things that others don't have to.  What Paul experienced in his body was obviously something serious enough for him to ask God to take it away several times.  If we look closely, we'll see that his situation was not uncommon.  Maybe for some people, God would require that they live in a country where persecution of believers is common.  For others, a life of having to give up the ones they love the most might be the price they have to pay -- a child called home at an early age, a spouse, or a parent.

When things of that nature occur, we somehow know that, since the particular circumstance is beyond our control, we must yield to God's will.  Yet, for some reason, when it comes to illness, we don't want to admit that the same God may choose to take us through a season of total dependence on Him as well so that He can be glorified in the testimony that we will be able to share with others.  This makes it no easier when we have to endure physical pain.

Nevertheless, God assures us that we CAN go through even this because He's extending His great grace to us.  He does expect us to be content in such a state for the simple fact that He has chosen us to go through a season where we are one with Christ in the fellowship of His sufferings.  He, Who could heal us at any time, asks us to endure sickness for whatever season so that He can use it for His glory.  Is it going to be easy?  No, for then we couldn't give Him credit for any of it.  When we're at our weakest, He promises to make His strength perfect in us.  If you don't think this state of contentment is possible, or that it brings Him glory, just ask the people on our praise team at ALM who  recently endured therapy after brain aneurisms and various types of cancer... And came out on the other side.

Prayer:  Father, You are the all-wise God Who sees beyond what we can and decides what He wants us to endure for the sake of Your Son, Jesus.  When we look at His cross, we see that ours is small in comparison.  Yet, You count us worthy to represent You in this way.  May every ounce of glory You intended through this suffering be given to You.  And may Your children walk in a place of contentment even in sickness, knowing that Your grace is sufficient through it all.  In Jesus' Name.  Amen.

Jesus, Our Example

Wednesday, August 10th, 2011

Today's Passage: Luke 3: 1-17
Memory Verse: Luke 3:8

"We all make mistakes!"  "I'm only human!" "Nobody's perfect!" These statements represent the brokenness of humanity.  Sometimes they're used as fair and accurate assessments.  Other times, however, they're excuses.  Is right-living a myth?  Have we been duped into thinking we shouldn't even try it?  God's word says we ALL have sinned and fallen short of His glory.  Question is, is that statement a death sentence, or a reminder that life without a savior is futile? Quite frankly, the answer to the question "Is right-living a myth" is simple.  It's yes, because of Jesus.

Right-living is not a myth.  In fact, it is an achievable lifestyle.  The thing that we must remember though, is right-living is not established through fear of the law.  It's established through the love of Christ.   In our passage, John the Baptist was compelling  the crowd to repent.  Why?  Because the law was designed to be followed to the letter.  It was not to be broken.  But, people often broke it anyway.  The problem was what the law was trying to do on the outside, it was failing to do on the inside.  Meaning, people were steadfastly going through the religious traditions, but their hearts were still wicked.  John understood that the cure for a wicked heart was needed.  See, humanity didn't need more laws.  It needed a savior.  It needed someONE, a redeemer, an advocate, a relationship.  If a person doesn't know Jesus, they don't have a shot at repentance.  He makes it possible.  He took the penalty for breaking the law upon Himself, therefore, if we live according to His love we're exonerated from living under the law (as long as we remain submitted to him).  Without Him, we set ourselves up to pay our own price for our sin.  That fact caused John, when he saw the religious crowd coming to be baptized, to ask if they thought a little water would deflect God's judgement (priceless).  He knew they were going to take their lil' dip and go right back to their old habits.  They were going to treat the baptism just as they treated the law.  But true repentance brings change.  "We all make mistakes".  That's right.  But a repentant heart doesn't REPEAT them.  "I'm only human".  True again.  That's why we walk by the SPIRIT, not the flesh.  "Nobody's perfect".  Wrong!  Jesus is perfect in all His ways.  And not only that, He came from Heaven and provided a perfect example for life on Earth.  In effect, He proved that right-living is totally doable.

Prayer:   Father, thank You that I don't have to use my own standards to know what's Holy.  Your Son Jesus set the perfect example by living it out right in front of us all.  I make a decision to trust and totally depend on You when walking this life out with no fear.  You've already taken on every curse, and absorbed every failure that there ever has been.  I have an earnest expectation that I'm coming out on the Day of Judgment, blameless... and it's all because of You.  I owe You  my very life.  In Jesus' Name, Amen.

King Solomon's Experiment

Today's Passage: Ecclesiastes chapters 1 & 2
Memory Verse: Ecclesiastes 2:3

What if God gave you a special assignment to conduct an experiment and collect data? What if He gave you a blank check to spend however much you wanted to on whatever you wanted? All He required of you would be to record the thoughts and feelings you had while you indulged in your deepest heart's desire. Like me, you'd probably think there's no way a holy God would let one of His children do that. But what if I told you He did exactly that?

The first two chapters of Ecclesiastes reads either like an adventure novel, the script for a James Bond movie, or even a science project. As the king of Jerusalem, you would expect him to take advantage of every possible indulgence for a man of his position-- and he did. But Solomon took it one step farther. Every decision and every purchase he made, every possession he obtained, and every physical thing he consumed was done for the sole purpose of testing the hypothesis of whether it would bring him long-lasting pleasure. The difference between you or I taking on the task versus him is this: he had been endowed with God's wisdom. This gave him a certain perspective on everything he did that we probably wouldn't have had.

In God's own ultimate wisdom, He knew there would be a remnant in the twenty-first century who faced the challenge of walking upright before Him while enduring temptations and worldly pleasures that threatened to deter us from being totally devoted to Him. I can see Him taking His holy fingers and writing the scientific plan out Himself, making provision through a supernatural extension of grace for Solomon to experience everything the human being could have an appetite for-- and not be consumed by it. And I don't know about you, but I'm finally admitting to myself that I don't think this would be the case for me.

Solomon concludes at the end of his quest something he wanted all of us to understand: no earthly pleasure brings any eternal satisfaction. We have in his words the very same advice we'd want to pass on to our children or younger siblings. We'd want to tell them, "Don't go down that road. I've already been there, and there's no fulfillment in it." True contentment is only found in a life where WE are not the center of the universe; GOD is, and the fulfillment of His kingdom is the only quest we need to pursue. So let me summarize King Solomon's Experiment by reiterating: only that which is accomplished for God and His kingdom will last. Find contentment in Him, and you will never search again.

Prayer: Father, You are the all-wise God. You see what we don't, and You know what's sent by the enemy to destroy us. Thank You for being the ultimate Shepherd, looking out for my protection, and keeping me from all evil. Even when I willfully indulged in sin, You extended grace to me. Now, I want to leave the writings You're allowing me to create as a testimony of Your delivering power, just like Your Son Solomon. Let it bring You glory... In Jesus' Name, Amen.

The Picture of Contentment

Today's Passage: Psalm chapter 23
Memory Verse: Psalm 23:1

What is at the root of all the overeating, excessive buying and failed marriages? Why are people of God finding themselves in the very same situations as those of the world: sick, broke, divorced, busted and disgusted? One very simple word comes to mind: LACK. We think we are missing something that we don't have or can't get, so we have to obtain it on our own. In truth, we have everything we need, but we really only want what makes us feel good -- even if it's bad for us. In the message on Sunday, we found out that this is an unhealthy appetite for things that will never satisfy.

Through the anointing of God, David paints the most vivid picture of what we really should be walking in-- contentment-- using a sheep. Contentment is actually the opposite of lack, which is a carnal desire to have the God- void filled. Since Adam and Eve allowed the enemy to deceive them into thinking they needed more than all they had been given in the garden, this void was created. So those who have a relationship with Christ need to see this picture. Sheep have a reputation of being mindless animals, following their shepherd dumbly wherever he goes with the staff. They can't think for themselves, so they depend on him to provide for them everything they NEED.

The shepherd is solely responsible for taking the sheep where the best grass is, and where they can drink tranquilly without having to worry about predators jumping out to get them. Hungry wolves have to watch from a distance as the shepherd confidently protects them. Even when they stray without noticing the danger, as sheep are known to do, the shepherd will use the rod to remind them not to do that again. As a result of all this tender care, the sheep know that in perilous times, the shepherd will do everything in his power to protect them, even at the expense of his own life. That's why they do not hear or trust the voice of any other shepherd (John 10:2-6).

The parallel here is that WE are the sheep of our Lord's pasture. We have no idea how to take care of ourselves, and certainly no clue what is best for us. So we MUST depend completely on His will for us. He provides everything we need to sustain us: why do we need to look for anything more? He sacrificed His Son for us, and so we can trust Him to protect us from all evil. Even when we have to be subjected to chastisement or suffering, it is ultimately for our good. God hurts when we pine after things that He already plans to give us in His time. Today, may we make up our minds that we will be like the sheep in the pasture of our Shepherd, Jehovah Roha. That is the true picture of contentment.

Prayer: Father, thank You for the revelation of the sheep. You are my Shepherd, and I don't need a thing. All my desires are in You. My steps are ordered in Your ways, and I will follow You by faith, not by sight. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

Prayers That Prevail: Justice

Today's Passage: Isaiah 61
Memory Verse: Isaiah 61:8

Father, we first give You praise for Your faithfulness and kindness. There is no one like You. No one cares for us like You, no one protects us like You, and no one loves us like You. No matter where we are or what we have, we appreciate everything You do for us. "We are content with the manna You give us". What an awesome God You are!

Because You so perfectly care for us, we have no need to be consumed with ourselves. So we turn our face toward Your broken, bound, and addicted children. Your word says You love justice. Therefore, let justice be our love and passion as well. Let us bring Your justice to those who have been abused. Let us bring justice Lord to those who have been neglected and thrown away. They need to know that You've been there all along. Let us bring justice to the impoverished and to the homeless. They need to know Your love still exists in this world. Justice! That's Your command over Your children. And we receive it now, and forever more, in Jesus' name. Amen

It's Up to Us

Today's Passage: Isaiah 61
Memory Verse: Isaiah 61:1

All around us, the world works very hard to make it appear as if they are extremely happy. Every commercial on television or magazine ad shows people with great big smiles while they party, doing everything they're big and bad enough to do. And yet, every weekly news report includes at least one suicide, drug overdose, or other disastrous ending to lives that are supposed to be so happy. These problems just do not match up with the picture they try to sell us.

What's more, this sad state is not just a Hollywood thing. There are people around us everywhere we go who are facing the same mountains of oppression created by the enemy. Some of them are even believers just like us, walking day by day in a dark place where they feel there's no way out. So what is the solution to all this pain? Is God so cruel that He would sentence the whole world to enduring everything being dished out by satan and his imps? Not the God that I know.

Today's passage lets us know that there IS an answer. Why? Because He placed something inside ALL of us that holds the answer. He gave us the anointing to encourage those who are poor in spirit, those who feel as if all hope is gone. We are to help the brokenhearted, those who've been let down so many times that they think life will always be this way. The Word even goes on to say that we are to DECREE the release of captives, the freeing of prisoners, and announce the year of the Lord's favor. These are legal words that are used in political situations. Why do they apply to us? Because when we live for Jesus Christ, He gives us the legal authority to speak things that are not as though they were, and they SHALL come to pass.

So what does God expect us to do? On any given day, we will come into contact with the very kinds of people we've already talked about. There will always be people who need to be encouraged, and others who must be convinced that Jesus went to the cross so they could be free in every area. And always, we can lift up prayers for specific as well as general situations, decreeing and declaring their freedom just as the Word says. Remember, when we do our part, these very people will turn around and be used of God to do theirs: rebuild the ruins and restore the formerly desolate places. That said, it's really up to us whether change will come to our city or not. God has already made provision to bring it to pass. WE just have to be willing to die to ourselves and be used of God in a mighty way. The alternative? Live with the pain and degradation we see all around us. And THAT is too high a price to pay.

Prayer: Father, when I look at how far away from Your original plan this world is, it's heartbreaking. Then I remember that You are still in the plan, and You've already made provision for the cries of the oppressed to be answered. You've anointed me to do all these things, so all I need to remember is that it's not by my might or power, but by Your Spirit. Use me and all Your people to accomplish Your will on this earth. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

Make Room!

Today's Passage: Isaiah chapter 54
Memory Verse: Isaiah 54: 2-3

Ten years ago, I was more spiritually sound than I'd been since giving my life to the Lord ten years before that. Pastor Chris and I had been at Abundant Life for two years, and we'd made it through some really tough times, finally settling in our hearts that we would live and die for Christ alone no matter what. So I can truly say that I didn't think any other time could get any better than this time.

Because of the awesome way God had been speaking into my life through my pastors (then Pastors Ray and Peggy, as well as then co-pastors Chad and Nette), I received a vivid revelation of the power to minister through my gift of singing. I'd always known that there was something God-breathed about this gifting, but I now began to understand that to whom much is given, much is also required. So I began to obey the voice of the Lord when He prompted me to say what He spoke into my heart while we were ministering in song. It was quite exhilarating to be able to sing a new song while ministering a familiar one, and to see that my husband was also being given this tremendous gift.

But I soon learned that, like everything else we do for God, this gifting was not about me, but I was simply a tiny vessel in the large scheme of things when it comes to God wanting to speak to His people. As the time passes, I have come to understand more and more that I must lay aside the weight that so easily besets me in order to be ready for God to use me to speak to others. He has literally enlarged my territory by making me a part of a team of ministers without whom I feel incomplete, whereas before I thought I was doing something when someone asked me to minister in song. Like Paul, if there's anything to boast about, it's in the mighty way God chooses to use a wretch like I used to be.

When I look at my purpose now, I see that there's still room for even more enlargement. I understand that He's just growing me up even more, getting rid of the extra weight that still threatens to keep me out of the position of even more availability. And one big difference: it's not just me and Pastor Chris walking out our destiny; rather, it's us and our kids whom God is using in even more ways at their young age than He did in us. I'm more confident than ever before that God is not done yet. We all have more ground to cover, more territories to claim for the kingdom. With the gifting and callings inside of us, the only thing standing in the way of our success in being used by our Father is our willingness to make room for Him in our lives. I challenge you today: enlarge the place of your tent. Make room for God's grace to take you beyond your wildest dreams to places only He can take the credit for. And, just as His Word says, NO WEAPON formed against you will be able to prosper as you make yourself available to accomplishing His will on this earth.

Prayer: Father, I'm amazed at how fast ten years have gone by. I've watched You take this miserable life and make something useful out of it. Now every day is worth living, not just because You provide for me every minute, but because You continue to teach me to make room for You to manifest Yourself. I enlarge my tent and stretch wide my boundaries, declaring today and every day that there will be NO LIMITS to Your will being done in and through my life. In the mighty Name of Jesus I pray, Amen.

Today's Passage: Isaiah 51:1-16
Memory Verse: Isaiah 51:7

Ha ha!  Those old 'Popeye the Sailor' episodes still make me laugh. It's also funny (in a different way) how old things can still teach relevant messages.  For instance, Popeye taught us to never give up.  No matter how big your adversary is, you can win if you try.  Well, he can't REALLY take the credit for teaching us that, but you get the point.  In order to win, we have to know who we are.  We have to know what's inside us, right?

I admit, I used to laugh when Bluto would pound on Popeye.  But it's not funny at all when the enemies of my life pound on me.  Believe it or not, the devil uses people to scheme bad things for you, talk negativiely about you, and even do/say evil things to your face.  You can be the nicest person in the world, but it won't matter.  Jesus told us that the world will hate you because of Him.  That's right.  The spirit in your enemies despise you because you're chosen.  They resent the fact that God's love and favor is resting on you.  In all that, however, we have to be like Popeye.  We have to stand against them and declare what God has spoken.  We can't allow ourselves to get distracted or too easily angered.  Think of the people in your life that persecute you.  Now try to see them through God's eyes.  They're broken and hurting.  They have issues that they are powerless to fix.  When their issues get the best of them, their only recourse is to lash out.  They need someone to hurt like they're hurting.  It's the way they've learned to communicate.

The Bluto's of the world feel as small as they look large.  They don't realize that there's a purpose for their lives.  All they can think of is the brokenness and anger they feel.  Bluto was also very prideful. There were a few things Popeye could have taught him, but he thought he knew it all.  Therefore, when Olive Oil (y'all just go with me okay?) would go out with him, he didn't treat her well.  His pride made him selfish, believing it was all about him.  So Olive would just run back to Popeye (who was the humble gentleman).

Well, in conclusion, Popeye would always win the fight because he was strong and confident, and he had SOMETHING special inside him.  When life beats you up, take a bite of God's word and renew your strength.  Know that no thing or no one can stand against you if God is on your side.  In our text today, God says in verse 7 to hold His teaching inside you and pay no attention to insults.  And when you get mocked, don't let it get you down.  Hallejuah!  It's not what THEY say about you, it's what HE says about you, and what you believe about yourself that matters.  So believe God has the best for you.  He loves you...and so do we!  God bless.

Prayer:  Father, thank You for being there for me.  Your strength is made perfect in my weakness.  With You Lord, I don't have to fear my enemies because You have already made me more than a conquerer.  There's no God like You, and no love like Your love.  Thanks for being the lifter of my head.  I'll always give You praise, in Jesus' name. Amen

H.U.M.P. Day!!!!

Today's Passage: Isaiah 50: 4-10
Memory Verse: Isaiah 50:4

Greetings, Lifers! God has put us on a journey to turning off the controls used by the enemy to keep us desensitized to His Word, while maintaining desperate cravings for his stuff. It is quite a challenging process as we all know. The flesh becomes accustomed to doing certain things-- eating what and when it wants, buying whatever, and watching what it wants to. So in the season of turning FROM the spirit of lust TO self- denial, being filled with the true love of God which casts out all fear, we need to fall in love with God's Word and the victory within.

How can we do this? Today's passage tells us to rely on God to wake us up early, before the world's influence kicks in. He promises to speak as often as we are willing to listen, and God always keeps His promises. Every morning when we wake up, we need to be still in order to hear what God has to say about what He has in store for us. Yet, anxious thoughts and concerns seem to easily sidetrack us, pulling us away from our Father before He can speak life and strength into us.

Which brings us to today's H.U.M.P. Day challenge. The first chance you get, find a quiet place where you can allow the voice of God to speak to you. His Word says when He speaks, we come away filled with wisdom. There's no such thing as walking in fear or confusion when He is around. If you didn't get a chance to let Him speak to you this morning, it's okay. No matter when, you still can. Just let Him in. When we get to the place where we truly begin to see God's Word as the final authority in our lives, our purpose for every day will become much clearer. Have a purpose-filled day!

Today's Passage: Isaiah chapter 45
Memory Verse: Isaiah 45:8

Have you ever wondered how the apostles were able to spread the gospel? How was word able to spread so far about one Man Who was already dead? If you read the book of Acts, you'll see that in order for them to get to all the surrounding areas, they had to use the available transportation (of course, not counting that slick miracle played by the Holy Spirit when He whisked Phillip from one place to another in Acts chapter 8). Point is, they didn't spare any expense but made obeying the Great Commission their highest priority.

When it comes to today's ministries in the church of God, a huge emphasis seems to be put on not only asking believers to give more, but also to believe that God wants us all financially prosperous. Some think this emphasis is for selfish reasons: so that more people can give to the particular ministry that seems to have the greater impact at the moment. Others say God never intended for believers to be so focused on being wealthy, because the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil as the Word says.

Although there is truth in the fact that we must be careful not to put so much focus on getting rich (which we were taught just this week is a result of lust), the question that remains is this: how are we to get the gospel to the ends of the earth without it? Another even more important question is, what is God's heart on the matter? Part of the answer is found in today's passage. God describes the barriers that keep His people from accessing the financial resources that they need as first mountains, then bronze doors, and finally iron bars. In God's eyes, they're merely wisps of grass that He can simply blow away by His power. But He knows that they would be a problem for those of us in human skin.

The promise that we can walk away with for today is that God DESIRES to provide for His own. Whoever has His kingdom at heart will get whatever they need to accomplish it. The only problem we'll run into is if we ever try to misuse the kingdom's calling to meet our own goal, as Ananias and Sopphira discovered in the book of Acts.know that it's the Father's will to open every door we dream of walking through as long as our focus remains on spreading the gospel. Note what He says in verse 8. He calls for the heavens to pour down rain so that salvation and deliverance can be made available for all. Does that sound like a God Who will shut up those same heavens when we pray for provision to be made so we can let others know How wonderful He is? I think not. As long as we keep our hearts in the right place, no good thing will He withhold from us.

Prayer: Father, thank You for showing us Your heart concerning wealth. You don't mind us having it when we prefer to use it for Your kingdom. May our hearts grow even bigger with the desire to take Your love to the ends of the earth. May we never possess an ounce of greed for financial gain, but turn our hearts ever toward You. In Jesus ' Name, Amen.
