Today's Passage: Revelations chapters 4 through 7
Memory Verse(s):

Father, today I thank You for Jesus, the Lamb slain before the foundation of the world.  I find myself in awe that He sacrificed Himself to provide redemption for all my sins.  No-one else was found worthy to open the scrolls.  But He, because He laid down His life for us all, was the only One worthy to do this.  For this reason, we will all praise You both until eternity.

As I prepare to go into Your house this morning, I strip myself of everything that would stand in the way of my entrance into Your presence.  I repent for allowing complacency and distractions to cloud my view and make my priorities something other than seeking and placing You first in my life.  As I worship You today, may the scales fall off my eyes that I may see Who Your Son Jesus really is: the Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End.

He is the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the True and Faithful Witness.  And I testify along with all the saints who will be too many to be numbered that my life is Yours.  I will be forever devoted to You, living out my days by declaring Your goodness to those who may not have a clue.  I prY also for those who don't know that death, he'll, and the grave have been cheated by taking away their power.  Live big in me forever, and I am so looking forward to worshipping at Your feet when You come to take us all home.  In Jesus' Precious Name, Amen.

More Revelations on the Revelation of John

Today's Passage: Revelations chapters 2 & 3
Memory Verse(s): Rev. 3:11-12

Revelation number three: God wants us to know where we stand with Him more than anything.  When I was attending grade school, the teachers habitually gave us a round-about idea of what we should study, almost as if they wanted us to fail.  But God never approaches us with this hit- and- miss attitude.  Everything He wants us to know about what He expects of us is outlined in His Word.

Revelation number four: we may attempt to deceive others as to how righteous we are, but there's no way we're fooling God!  He knows us inside and out.  Each time He addresses the churches, He reminds them: "I know your deeds"... I can see God speaking to TD Nation, reminding us of what we need to do to stay close to His heart.  To some of us, He sees that we are steadfast, always working and serving in His house.  We're not easily swayed from our course, and won't be found among those who fall prey to false teachings.

But the warning to this group of us is to go back to our first love.  This means we may have become so focused on serving and doing for God (the Martha syndrome), that we've forgotten the passion of pursuing a relationship with Him, just sitting at His feet and woshipping Him for Who He is (Mary's portion).  To others of us God is saying we're having to go through persecution for a specific season and purpose.  He's calling us to remain faithful despite it all so that we can receive a crown of life on the day of judgment.

Revelation number five: I believe the spirit that the Father hates the most is the spirit of apathy, or the lukewarm spirit.  This spirit allows the person to feel or show little enthusiasm for the things of God.  The person operating in this spirit attends church often, but is unattached to or unaffected by anything that goes on there.  The difference between such an individual and all the others is the lack of a desire to repent and draw closer to God.  The key is repentance.  If we will humble ourselves, seek His face, and live in a place of repentance, we will never stay far from the Father's heart.

Prayer: Father, I've heard Your Word, and I now take the time to repent of callousness.  I repent for allowing procrastination, containment, and distraction to keep me from totally selling out to Your kingdom.  I now re-commit my soul, heart and body to pursuing You forever.  Be glorified in me all my days.  In Jesus' Name, Amen.

Revelations on the Revelation of John

Friday, April 29th, 2011

Today's Passage: Revelations chapter 1
Memory Verse (s): Rev. 1: 11 and 19

Revelation number one: In order for God to trust any of His saints with revelation, they must be willing to undergo a certain level of persecution.  Persecution is the great separator.  It definitely separates those who merely SAY they will serve God with all their hearts from those who are actually willing to DO it.  If you find yourself floating on a flowery bed of ease all the time, with no trials or tribulation in sight, chances are you're not going to be in a place where you might hear or see God speak.

John, one of the apostles who lived and suffered because he knew Jesus, lived a life of total devotion even in suffering.  After having been targeted by the Roman government as a troublemaker, he was sent to a deserted island where he lived in exile for many years.  Did he waste any time grumbling or complaining about his lot in life?  No, because he was too busy looking out for the purpose for which he was placed here.  He had already been used by God to minister to many, and now he was put in a place where there was no-one to talk to.

Which leads me to revelation number two: no matter WHERE you are, you have to recognize that God has a purpose and a plan to use you if you've given yourself totally to Him.   As a man who was already familiar with the miraculous, I can just see John the beloved chuckling to himself and saying: "Well, Father, I know You're not bringing me to this deserted island for nothing.  Show me Your will, and bring it to pass.". And as God began to do just that-- revealing His  Word to John for those present believers and others yet to come, John was ready to accomplish the task, one he was already prepared for beforehand.

In these last days, the very ones John prophesied about, are you even ready to stand for righteousness and holiness... Even to the point of death?  Be careful what declaration you make, for you just might have to walk it out, and your decision will stand for eternity and beyond.  May we all be in just the right place at the right time to carry forth the powerful gospel of the kingdom of God, no matter the cost.  May we be so blessed to be entrusted with great revelation for generations yet to be birthed.

Prayer: Father, it is a very sobering thought that many believers may not want to consider.  But You are calling us to a place of selflessness and sacrifice.  No matter what that might be, may we not forget that we are ultimately to carry out Your will, which is to spread the gospel of the kingdom throughout this world.  Draw us closer to Yourself, and help us be able to face every trial, no matter how fiery it may be.  In Jesus' Precious Name, Amen.

Blood That's Thicker than Water

Thursday, April 28th, 2011

Today's Passage: 1John 3:11-4:21
Memory Verse(s): 1 John 4:20-21

Many times, I've heard the expression, "Blood is thicker than water".  Every time I heard it, I knew exactly what it meant.  It meant that the bonds we have with our family members should be stronger and mean more than those we have with people who are not related to us by blood.  In some ways it rings true, but in a different sense now that I know the truth.

On one hand, I've seen families that are extremely close.  They do everything together, and have relationships that last beyond any challenges that could possibly arise.  On the other hand, I've seen family members tear each other down and manifest nothing but hatred for each other, even though they shared the same genes.  Look at the example of Cain and Abel.  What is the difference?  It certainly couldn't be that some are born with this love, while others have to struggle to find it.

The difference, of course, is Jesus Christ.  No matter how close or distant we may feel towards our blood relatives, there is something about having the living blood of Jesus inside you.  It compels you to love like He loves, which in turn means you'll be willing to make the sacrifices necessary to communicate the love of God.  And because of that love, there will be no favoritism or partiality towards others -- whether they are family or not.

But if God's love doesn't live and dwell in us, what you'll see present among us is envy, malice, backbiting, hatred, covetousness, and-- you guessed it: murder.  We'll allow seeds of contempt to grow in our hearts towards our brothers, which in turn will become trees of unrighteousness that will ultimately lead us to commit murder -- spiritual or otherwise.  God is serious about us loving our brothers and sisters, being their keeper, and performing acts of love towards them.  It's this love that will convict us and prepare us for the Lord's coming.  Will you be ready?  Only those who have God's love will be.

Prayer: Father, You have specific plans for Your children where the plan of love is concerned.  Knowing this, I am determined to link up with Your sons and daughters, giving and receiving the love You have given us.  You remind us in Your Word that we can't claim to know You, yet show contempt for our brothers.  So I open my heart today.  Flood me with Your true love and get the glory out of what others will see.  In Jesus' Name, Amen.

Count It All Joy!!!

Today's Passage: James 1:27-2:26
Memory Verse: James 1:2

Oprah, Dr. Phil, Montell, Maury.  The names in the previous list have become this nation's conscience.  If people want to know how to love, they ask Dr. Phil.  If they want to know how to be happy or successful, they ask Oprah.  If they need help with an abusive spouse, they ask Montell.  And if they want to know who their baby's daddy is (lol)......well, you get the point.

As for me, I'll take James.  You know, the Book of James in the Bible.  God's Word in this book contains life lessons that will never grow old.  It's amazing that something written so many years ago is still so relevant today.  Only God can do that.  Initially, James tells us to consider it a gift when tests and challenges come at us.  Why?  Well, because tests and challenges build faith, and when a faith-life is on display, one's true colors are shown.  God wants us to have faith.  He doesn't want us to try to get out of things prematurely.  He wants us to learn, develop strength, and grow.  Now that doesn't mean God has set you up for a lifetime of suffering.  It just means resistance builds strength.  If a body-builder wants bigger muscles, he works out with heavy weights.  Therefore, if you want stronger faith, allow the tests of life to come, then meet them head-on with the Word of God.  James also tells us not to worry.  I heard it said once that worry is the fear (or pride) of not being in control.  People have issue with not being in control, so worrying is their defense mechanism.  It's their way of "tricking their minds" into thinking they're handling the problem.  Foolish, isn't it?    If your dad owned all the water in the world, would you worry about dying of thirst?  If your dad owned all the farms in the country, would you worry about starving to death?  If the answer to those questions are no,  why would you worry then when your Father can do anything?

In conclusion, God wants us to trust Him.  He'll never forsake us.  Therefore we can't make prosperity our goal in life.  James says prosperity withers like a flower in the sun.  It's literally here today and gone tomorrow.  It's bad enough to put all your eggs in one basket, it's even worse if that basket (like the world) has holes in it.  Oprah, Dr. Phil, Maury, Montell.  I tell you what....I'll still take James.

Prayer:  Father, You are the light on our pathway.  Only Your counsel is sure.  If we pay attention, we'll realize You've already given us the answers to all life's problems.  If we'll trust in You, we'll discover a whole new level of faith, the kind of faith that pleases You.  Let us begin today.  You are our source and our provider, and our lives are ever Yours, in Jesus' name. Amen

Be Holy, Be Sober, Be Ready

Tuesday, April 26th, 2011

Today's Passage: 1 Peter 1-2:12
Memory Verse(s): 1 Peter 2:12

Today's passage is a confirmation of everything we have already received from our pastors as late as Sunday, and as early as the beginning of this year. In Peter's letter to the believers of the early church spread abroad, there is a sense of urgency to stand firm in everything Christ has purchased for us on the cross. I was so blessed to hear the word for the house, complete with a thorough explanation of what salvation really means.

It was God's answer to the problem of sin- sickness, infirmity and hopelessness. Christ finished the work when He took the keys of our dominion and inheritance from the enemy. I was so overjoyed to hear that salvation means "defense". No wonder Peter said the prophets were in awe of how perfect this plan was, and even angels are curious about it.

With all this in mind, get rid of all attitudes that would distract and derail us from the purpose of God. If I could sum up for Peter what we need to do, I would only need these three phrases: Be holy, be sober, and be ready! Be holy, for God is holy. There are no longer any excuses for constantly failing just so we can be rescued by God's grace. We must use what has already been provided: our armor of defense and offense against the enemy. Remember that a successful soldier never leaves any part of his armor exposed.

Secondly, be sober (the opposite of playful) and prayerful. The enemy is a master deceiver, finding tricky little ways to cause us to lose sense of time. We're so busy squabbling over petty things, the appointed times ordained for ministry are fading. Our eyes need to be wide open. Our senses do not need to be dulled by anything created by man or demon. The Lord is near, and many lives are at stake. Finally, we must be ready to face the fiery darts of temptation and persecution. Get rid of the "why me?" mentality-- we must be willing to participate in the sufferings as well as the glory of Jesus. Our ultimate goal: to let our lives be used for the advancement of God's kingdom. Ready or not... The war has already begun waging. But God's plan has also already been put in place. All that's needed is you.

Prayer: Father, I gird myself up in my my mind. I wrap myself in God's armor, and spiritually make every part intact. I declare that I will not be a casualty of the enemy, but will walk in Your love. I humble myself under Your mighty hand. My life is Yours, and I am so glad this fight is fixed. Thank You for Jesus and His way out. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

A New Creation

Monday, April 25th, 2011

Today's Passage: 2 Corinthians 4:1-6:2
Memory Verse(s): 2 Cor. 5:16-17

I used to be known as many things, but I am not those things anymore.

Jesus took my very soul and drenched it in the blood that He shed for me. I gradually drowned in it, but when I was revived, He had allowed me to die to every evil thing that I once was. The Word of God says that it is shameful to even mention those things done in the dark, but my only purpose here is to release it and allow it to be put into the atmosphere as a witness to the life-changing power of God, where it has no more power over me.

I used to be a fornicator, having value only in my body, which I thought could only be used for one thing: to seduce men and have them pay attention to me. I became an adulteress, having had that iniquity passed on to me before I was even formed in my mother's womb. My whole outlook on my life was one of worthlessness, for why else would I have allowed myself to be subjected to such debasing acts? I had given in to the same spirit of deceit that has played the lie so many times, it sounded like the truth.

Until The Way, The Truth, and The Life walked in. Brick by brick, He removed the shame that was so much a part of my makeup that I didn't think I could let it go. He replaced the lies I had been told -- that I wasn't much to look at -- with the most beautiful words a woman could hear: " You ARE the most beautiful woman in the world.". He planted a young man in my life who feared Him, and whose destiny was entwined with mine to make a mighty impact on this world. The worth I found did not come from this young man, my husband and knight in holy armor-- but from God Who made me complete.

Almost twenty years later, as I have grown and matured in the love, wisdom and knowledge of the Father, it has been revealed to me that the new creature is emerging more and more. By no means am I the finished product I will be when I stand before Him in my glorified body. But most certainly, as I look at myself in His mirror, I see the image of Himself that motivates me to press toward the mark of looking just like Him. Those who knew me before will have to blink several times if they are looking for the labels by which I was once known. Those garments have all been stripped away, and the stench of sin is surely fading. In what ways have I become a brand new creature? In every way, inside and out. In what way can this take place for you? The moment you trust that God is the Deliverer, and give Him all of you.

Prayer: Father, never in my wildest dreams would I have ever dreamed my life could change the way it has. Thank You for giving me the new life I needed. Old things have passed away. I pray now for those reading this, and ask that the magnetic force that is Your love would embrace and draw them to You like they never have been before. May their hearts' desire be only to become what You intended for them as well. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

Prayers that Prevail

Today's Passage: 1 Corinthians 13:1-13
Memory Verse: 1 Corinthians 13:8

Father, You did everything to prove to us that there was a more excellent way. Because of the cross, I can receive Your love-- the True Love that comes from Your heart. Gone is the shame of my youth, when I did unspeakable things and sinned against You. But Your love is so full of forgiveness and forgetfulness that it's as if I have never done anything wrong.

Armed with this new life You've given me, I make a decision to walk in the same love You extended to me. It's a love that suffers long, is kind, not envious, not prideful, and not selfish. This means I have to be accountable to the people with whom I have relationships-- my spouse, my kids, siblings, and other relatives. My ultimate goal is to meet the need in their lives rather than seek to have my own needs met.

I confess that in the area of showing love through the choices I make everyday, I have failed miserably. I have often been deceived into focusing on my feelings, my opinions, and my intentions rather than those of others. I say now with the boldness of the Truth that makes us free: my way of claiming to love has not worked. It has left me on the offensive, many times harboring the spirit of unforgiveness and bitterness.

Therefore, I declare that it will become my life's goal not to become easily upset, even when I feel I have been wronged. I choose to be patient rather than easily agitated. I agree with Your way-- the more excellent way --to conduct myself when interacting with others that I may not necessarily agree with. I choose to believe that You will give me the grace to think only good of others, and not evil. I will rejoice in the truth about Your children walking in victory, not allowing iniquity to win. Thank You for loving me completely by sacrificing Your Son. May I spend the rest of my days giving my life for You. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

One Happenin' Ride!

Saturday, April 23rd, 2011

Today's Passage: 1 Thessalonians 4:13-5:11
Memory Verse: 1 Thessalonians 4:18

Ugh! Are you kidding me?  I paid all that money for entrance into the theme park, and NOONE in my family would ride a rollercoaster with me.  Seriously?  That's why people go to theme parks.  Watching those coasters glide on the tracks made me even more excited.  The screams of the people as they dipped and flipped made me want to ride every one of them.....twice!  I thought "What are we doing"?  Just getting to the park is not enough.  You have to get on the ride.  You can't have the experience without "the ride"!

Let's talk about this for a moment because I believe there's a spiritual reference to this.  Many Christians go to church so often, and for so long, they get lulled into thinking that's all there is.  They're convinced that we go to church until we die, then wake up in Jesus' arms.  That's all well and good, but we can't leave out the fun part: the ride!  Today's passage tells us, first of all, that it's a promise.  Meaning, its not a matter of if, but when.  Since Jesus conquered the grave, it has no power over us.  As a matter of fact, His victory turned a place of condemnation into a place of rest.  So, the grave doesn't have the power the devil meant for it to have.  It's simply a resting point.  Think of it as an airport layover just before your final flight.  There's no fear of the airport because you know you'll soon be leaving.  Yes!  What a comfort!  I'm so glad that even if me or my loved ones have to leave "this" life, they still get to go on "the ride".  C'mon, you don't want to do all that work, pray all those prayers, and make all those sacrifices, and miss the ride, do you?  Heaven IS our destination.  But, don't you want to meet Him in the air?  See, whether we come from the grave, or if we're still alive when He comes, we're going to meet Him in the air.  That's exciting.  I'm in line...Are you?

Finally, my Friends, don't worry about the arrangements.  No-one can tell you when or where to meet for "the ride".  You just have to be ready......rapture ready!   Don't get emotionally tied into things you can't take with you.  Your home, cars, wardrobe, and money won't pass through customs.  Your life's motto has to be: Watchin' the sky, ready to fly!  To make sure you have a ticket, you have to stay TOTALLY DEVOTED to the purpose of God.  Make Him your source and priority.  Other than that, I think you're good.  Submit your heart to Jesus, and you'll book your ticket for one happenin' ride.

Prayer:  Father, I don't know when Jesus is coming back, but I want to be ready.  He's preparing a place for me and I don't want to miss it.  I must first thank You for giving me a chance to enter Your kingdom.  This weekend is so special because it makes "the ride" possible.  So, as You allow me to live out the rest of my days, I'll try to make sure there's no wasted time.  My purpose will be to occupy until Jesus comes.  What an awesome ride it will be! In Jesus' name. Amen.

The Simplicity of the Cross

Friday, April 22nd, 2011

Today's Passage: 1 Timothy 3:10-4:8
Memory Verse: 1 Tim. 3:16

I heard a news story today about two teenage girls who committed suicide. Speculation was that they had been bullied by other teens at their school, and they just couldn't handle it anymore. Like many other such stories, this one was written off as just another tragic event. Yet, those of us who know anything about what goes on in the spirit realm understand that it goes much deeper than that.

The enemy of the very souls of those young ladies seems to have won the battle where they are concerned. He managed to successfully blind them to the fact that there is a God Who loves them -- so much that He gave His only Son for us all. And there's the true tragedy. In almost every public school, students have access to so much technology, but These two never found out the love of God. Instead, all they received was the hate that only comes from satan.

Today's passage reminds us that life is too short, and that lives are hanging too far in the balance, for us as believers to focus on arguing with one another about doctrinal issues. The simplicity of the gospel of Jesus Christ is enough to convict, save, and deliver. The blood of Jesus was shed so that young people like the two I just mentioned would have a fighting chance to at least hear the good news and choose to reject it if they wanted to.

If you're reading this and you've not been given the opportunity to hear about Jesus, here it is: He came to earth to pay the penalty for our sin that we could not pay by ourselves. Every stripe He took was for every curse of sin to be broken. We are no longer victims but more than conquerors through Him. Ask Him today to be Lord, and every lie the enemy has told you will be stripped away. He loves you. You are not cast away or worthless. Accept His free gift today.

Prayer: Father, so many times we forget how precious Your Sacrifice was. It broke Your heart to see Him hanging and dying on that cross. Yet You went through it-- just for us. May we spend our remaining days on this earth spreading the news of the gospel of this kingdom to all who will believe. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

A Servants Work!

Thursday April 21, 2011

Today's Passage: 2 Timothy 2:1-26
Memory Verse: 2 Timothy 2:15

During his message last week, Pastor Chad made many profound statements.  One of the ones that really gripped me was "we are all in full-time ministry".  I thought "Wow!  That'd be nice".  Then he showed me through the Word, how we all truly are.  I know what you're thinking.  I too thought full-time ministry were pastors and music directors who not only had the titles, but maintain those positions in the church with compensation.  You know, without having to get a job outside of the ministry.  However, that's not what God's word says.  The Word says God called Pastors and leaders to "equip the saints to do the work of the ministry".  That's right.  We, the saints, are responsible for the work of the ministry.  Our pastors are responsible for equipping us for the work.

In Paul's second letter to Timothy, he encourages Timothy to "throw himself into the work for Christ".  We tend to occupy our lives with so many other things; selfishly living to acquire things for ourselves.  Pretty soon, those temporal things become our strive and purpose.  They become the reason we work, pray, and live.  We even convince ourselves our lives are meaningless without them.  In contrast, the life that Paul is describing to Timothy is just the opposite.  He tells him a soldier on duty does not get caught making deals at the market place.  He concentrates on carrying out orders.  Where has your focus been lately?  Has it been on that house you want?  Has it been on that special someone?  Don't let God catch you with your gaze on something/one else.  Keep your hand on the plow and finish the work He called you to.  Don't let anyone distract you.  This is the sure thing: If we die with Him, we'll live with Him; if we stick it out with Him, we'll rule with Him; but, if we turn our backs on Him, He'll have no other choice but to turn His back on us.  Why would He do that you say?  He'd do that because He's a gentleman.  He's not going to barge into your life and start changing things against your free will.  He loves the cheerful giver.  He loves the steadfast soldier.  He knows this life can be tough.  If you don't think He knows, find a good church this Sunday and I'm sure you'll change your mind.  Just stay on the path.  Like Paul said to Timothy, concentrate on doing your best for God.  Stay away from foolish talk and empty arguments.  Remember, when it comes to God's Word, you don't have to PROVE anything.  All you have to do is declare and believe.  God will manifest His Word in the life of the hearer in due season.

In conclusion, be able to take the good with the bad.  Stay balanced and level-headed.  God's Word says in a kitchen, you will find the finest china in the same room with the smelliest garbage.  That's the way it is sometimes.  You can't do this job without adversity.  As a matter of fact, you should expect to bump into the devil every now and then.  He's out there, prowling and creeping; looking for someone to kill, steal, and/or destroy.  But don't be afraid because you're an overcomer.  The Spirit of the Lord is in you.  And because of that.....you will win!

Prayer:  Father, this calling has its difficulties, but as long as You're with me, I'll be fine.  I just know I can no longer sit back and depend on someone else to do what You've called me to do.  I want to be a servant of ACTION, not just words.  So walk with me as I finish this race, and I'll make sure all glory goes to You, in Jesus' name. Amen.

Benefits of Leadership

Wednesday, April 20, 2011

Today's Passage:1 Timothy 6:3-21
Memory Verse: 1 Timothy 6:12

I haven't been in ministry very long, but in the time I've had, I've learned one thing for sure: we need leadership....good leadership. Leadership is needed in every aspect of life. Households need leadership; corporations need leadership; even sports teams need leadership.

When I came to this ministry, one of the first things I was taught was submission to leadership. That lesson doesn't come easy for most. I remember the many teachings on the importance of submission and its place in the Kingdom of God. I didn't understand it all at first, but I just went with it anyway. In doing so, what I found out was it wasn't just a "do this do that" kind of thing. Oh, there were certain things I was responsible for, but I never felt used or run over. This was actually a walk of preparation. Preparation, you ask? Yes, preparation. One has to be prepared for leadership, by leadership. And what is the greatest attribute of a leader? It is the ability to FOLLOW.

Maybe I could've jumped out and started my own church or business back then. Gosh, so many loved ones were telling me I should have. Maybe you feel you missed your opportunity or calling in life and now it's all over. Not! First of all, Ive seen many jump out there and start businesses and ministries without leadership, and they regret it today. Furthermore, the people that suggested that they should, don't even go to church anymore. What HAS been consistent in my life is good leadership. Good leadership keeps you accountable. It keeps you from falling into pitfalls and traps. Good leaders can see what you can't. Paul, in today's text, provided good leadership for Timothy. If you're a part of a good ministry, you have good leadership. Lean on them. Let them direct you. There are things you'll go through in life. You can't avoid them. But I guarantee somewhere in your walk, your leader(s) gave you a word of truth that will prepare you for anything.

Prayer: Father, there's nothing I'd rather do than follow where You lead. You've placed leaders in my life who have done the same. As they walk where You're calling them to walk, may I, too, be of service to You in leading others to serve You. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

Qualities of Leadership

Tuesday, April 19th, 2011

Today's Passage: 1 Timothy 3: 1-16
Memory Verse(s): 1 Tim. 3:8-10

The method used to select a leader in pretty much any sector of our society has mostly been a mystery to me until reading today's passage. Now I see that the idea of the qualifications of a leader are clearly spelled out in this passage. I realize that God expects those who are to be considered for leadership to be blameless (above reproach) in all things.

He expects the leaders of His church to first and foremost be morally upright, walking in such a way as to be an example to the body in the way they conduct themselves at home, in the church, and in the community. More than ever before, I am convinced that these are the same principles used even in the secular world to elect and appoint leaders. Before the whole "separation of church and state" debate. It's been an established understanding that biblical principles were the foundation for political leadership as well.

If this were not so, why on earth would everyone get so far up in arms about men in office who are found to be unfaithful to their wives? Why also would people, even those not claiming to be "religious", hesitate to vote for those running for office whose personal lives are questionable? No matter how unstable the moral foundation of our society seems to be becoming, it still holds on to certain basic ideals that are deeply rooted in the Word of God.

Consequently, it is so important for the church of God to recognize that, no matter how times change, He does not. He still expects His leaders to be faithful to one spouse, raise their children to fear Him, and to stand for what is right in spite of this world's fickle ideals. Let us not forget that God, the ultimate Judge, is still holding us to that high standard so that the blood of Jesus would not have been shed in vain. May the true church of God hold forth the light of righteousness and bring God glory until Jesus returns.

Prayer: Father, thank You for godly leaders who refuse to compromise and bow the knee to baal in this age where every moral standard is being compromised. Empower Your children to resist the enemy so that He may flee seven ways, and that Your Name be reverenced in everyrthing we say and do. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

Why We MUST Have Jesus

Today's Passage: Colossians 1:1-23
Memory Verse(s): Col. 1:16-17

It's always interesting to meet up with friends or family after a long time of not seeing each other. After the initial analysis of how much bigger or smaller we've gotten over the years, we automatically begin to rattle off our accomplishments. And it almost never fails: without even realizing I'm doing it, my spirit man sends out censors to find one shred of evidence that this person has had an encounter with Jesus Christ.

Every time this happens, I'm overwhelmed when he or she tells me how much richer life is with Him in it, and we spend even more time talking over each other about our God-encounters. But when the opposite occurs, the conversation eventually fizzles out and comes to a close because there's nothing left to connect us but a few memories from a past long gone. And afterwards, I walk away shaking my head at why it's so hard for some people to see how little life matters without Christ.

Today's passage answers the question why we must have Christ in order to have any meaning in our lives. It tells us that all things were made by and for Him, and nothing was made without Him. That means WE were created by and for Him, and only WITH Him does life have fulfillment. Before Christ, there's this God-void inside each of us that cannot be satisfied with anything man-made. Just ask the richest, most successful people by the world's standards. All they can do is seek out more people, places, and things to fill a void that cannot be filled by anything or anyone else.

But oh, when the God-man comes to live inside of you! Suddenly you can see more clearly; there is no more guilt or condemnation for past things you've done to destroy your life. Because of Him, the righteous requirements of God CAN be fulfilled. No more shame fills my heart -- only peace with God, love for myself and others, and hope for tomorrow exists. Are there hard times? Of course! But no pain or suffering can compare with the sweet fellowship of communing with Him, or with the glory He reveals when we worship Him. Why is Christ important? Because in Him reside all the things that are eternal, whereas the world's offerings are only for a moment. I wouldn't trade anything for my relationship with Him, and when you put your trust in Him, your life will never be the same. Seek and receive Him today while He can be found.

Prayer: Father, thank You for giving us Jesus. In Him we have redemption through His blood. He is the fullness of all that You are, and I need Him daily. My life is complete in Him. I pray now that everyone who is asking whether it really is worth all that to get to know Jesus will be filled with all the fulness of Him. Thank You for making Yourself available to us through Him. We will forever bring You glory in Jesus' Name, Amen.

Prayers that Avail Much

Today's Passage: Philippians 4: 2-9
Memory Verse: Phil. 4:8

Father, thank You for Your Word.  You have given me specific instructions on how to live well from one day to the next.  Whenever I obey You, I experience a deep fulfillment in my spirit.    As I prepare to go into Your house, I apply today's bread to my life, which has to do with my attitude.

First, I receive the Word that tells me to rejoice always in You.  You knew that circumstances would not always be pleasant or favorable.  So You want to teach Your people to walk in a joy that's not based on emotions or things that take place.  I ask You to flood me with Your joy, and that it will overflow wherever I go.

Next, I make a firm decision to walk in gentleness at all times.  I declare that Your love and grace has made it possible for me to see others the way You see them.  No longer do I have to look out for just myself, or put up walls to protect myself from negative influences from without.  I repent for the times I didn't obey, but wasted precious time looking for a reason to be depressed and difficult to deal with.

Finally, I will think on things that are pure, praiseworthy, true, and of good report.   I am Your anointed, You have chosen me to sing praises to Your  great Name.  No weapon formed against me will ever be able to prosper.  Everything that I've been called to accomplish will be done through me.  As I worship You, may My worship reflect Your character and draw You closer.  In Jesus' mighty Name, Amen.

The Whole Armor

Saturday, April 16, 2011

Today's Passage: Ephesians 6:10-20
Memory Verse: Ephesians 6:11

I begin this devotional today in hysterical laughter.  Someone told me they were living a hard life, and they should get saved because I have it easy.  Are you serious?  They said they felt like their enemies were always after them, and their life required them to make sacrifice after sacrifice.  Really though?  So, I told him who ever had the toughest life would buy the day's lunch.

Okay, I know we're supposed to make Christian life smell like roses when we're describing it to the world.  We're supposed to make them believe God is a little genie on our shoulder that grants all of our wishes.  Our lives never have trouble, and the only problem we have is agreeing on which denomination has it right.  WRONG!  This life, for the most part, is NOT for the weak.  Listen, our daily walk requires more armor than King Arthur and his whole court.  Why?  Well, because our enemy NEVER lets up.  He's always firing darts at us.  And when he's not doing that, he's accusing us of stuff we may actually be doing.  Our scripture for the day advises us to be strong and, oh, put on our armor.  Armor?  What in Heavens name do we need armor for?  God says to stand against the wiles of the devil.  A wile is a trick or device meant to fool, trap, or entice.  Which means every moment we live, the devil is out to get us.  Dude, even gangsters and thugs take a day or two off.  Christians are under attack all the time.  Some of us even endure attack while we sleep.  So, what keeps us alive you ask?  Truth, righteousness, and peace keeps us alive.  Also, faith, salvation, and the Word of God keeps us alive.

In conclusion, I think it's so cool that we have to wear armor for a fixed fight.  I thank God for loving us enough to spare no expense.  He makes sure to cover all the details.  He knows we're going to win, but He doesn't even want us to get hit.  So, put on the whole armor of God so you can stand in the evil day.  Be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.  Don't be afraid.  The God that is within you is greater than the enemy that's after you.  No sweat right?   Well, if it's any consolation, I had a great lunch.

Prayer: Thank You, Father for loving us so much.  I realize if I stay in Your care, there's nothing that can harm me.  No matter what the enemy does, he has to submit to Your authority.  There's never a need to be afraid of him.  So, I will rest in You for the rest of my days, in Jesus' name. Amen.

The Man, or the Suit?

Today's Passage: Galatians 5:16-6:10
Memory Verse: Galations 5:17

I was doing a Science lesson with a student the other day.  The lesson for the day was the Solar System.  One of the pictures in the textbook was an astronaut.  "What's that?" the student asked.  "An astronaut," I said.  He proceeded to ask what astronauts did, so I explained it to him.  Then he asked a question that got me thinking.  He asked, "What does he have to wear that funny suit for?"

You know we're just pilgrims in this natural world, right?  This place is not our home.  We're only here to expand our Father's kingdom by duplicating ourselves in people who don't know Him.  What does that have to do with the suit?  I'll tell you.  Because we're not at home here, just like astronauts when they go to the moon, we have to wear a suit.  The difference is, whereas the astronaut's suit helps him live, ours can get us into big trouble.  Found out what it is?  It's the flesh.  In reality, our flesh should have just as much authority over us as an astronuat's suit has over him.  It shouldn't be able to control how we live, what we choose, and where we go.  Why not, you say?  The reason is conforming to the flesh always leads to unGodly behaviors.  Its motivation is derived from what it sees, hears, feels , and tastes.  Therefore, there's no opportunity for faith to be exercised.   There's little motivation to tap into the supernatural things of God.  And God is spirit (not flesh), so we must worship Him in spirit.  From the time we were born, we were conditioned to appease our flesh.  Because of that, we struggle with concepts like faith and trust.

So you see, the suit is just for uniform.  It should hold no major value other than nutrition for energy and health so we can carry out the assignment of the Lord.  It should not tell us who and when to love.  It should not tell us when to worship.  It should not tell us when and what to eat, and its selfish desires should not be our priority in life.  Our spirit (the man inside the suit) should do all that.  Our spirit is our connection to God.  It is the place of wisdom within us.  The Bible says, "Don't you know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit and therefore He lives inside?"  The place where He lives is in your spirit.  See, the flesh produces "works" (do this, do that) because it's addicted to feeling good.  However, the spirit produces fruit (character) because it's in love with God.  Paul wrote in Galatians 5:17, "For the flesh lusts against the spirit, and the spirit against the flesh, and they are contrary to one another".  That being the case, the daily challenge is to choose which entity will lead you through the day.  Are you going to go with the man, or the suit?

Prayer:  Father, You have made provision for us to walk in victory over our flesh and its selfish desires.  We receive the sacrifice You made through Your Son Jesus.  The work was finished at the cross, so all we have to do is walk it out.  May our ultimate goal be to bring glory to Your Name, because only that which we accomplish for You will produce good fruit.  In Jesus' Name, Amen.

Choose LIFE!

Today's Passage: Romans chapter 8
Memory Verse(s): Rom. 8:5-8

Jesus told His disciples, "Any who desire to come after me must deny themselves, take up their cross, and follow me." And yet, it seems to be the one thing many believers struggle with on a daily basis. Self-control is one of the fruit of the Spirit that people in the world ought to be able to look at and see that we are God's own, but the opposite is true the majority of the time.

One area of self-denial that we need to walk in is what we put into our bodies. As much as we love God, the number of Christians who also happen to be overweight and plagued with health issues is staggering. Brothers and sisters, by no means do I mean to offend, but many times we choose not to hear the voice of the Holy Spirit when it comes to what we are choosing to eat, and how we take care of our vessels.

Another area of self-denial is the lack of control over our emotions. Again, we spend so much time saying how much we love God and have Him as part of our lives. However, we get easily offended when things don't go our way, then expect to waltz right into God's presence during worship. We allow our mouths to speak what's in our hearts, even if it means we'll be hurting others among us. The thing is, we aim to please our flesh more than the Spirit of God. We give in to the notion that as long as we're not committing a deadly sin, we're okay.

What we're not realizing is that, no matter how big or small, the enemy uses every single pattern or habit against us. We enter into a vicious cycle that only Christ can deliver us out of. The solution is to walk in the Spirit so that we don't fall into the trap of giving the enemy something he can use against us. To be carnal- minded is satan's recipe for thinking only of ourselves. In this mindset, everything we do is geared towards fulfilling our needs-- which NEVER decrease. Have you noticed how much MORE self-centered we become once we start, until our hearts are completely removed from anything in God's kingdom? Pretty soon, we can't pray, and not long afterwards we've been rendered ineffective. But taking the enemy's power over our flesh strips him of his ability to condemn us when we really want to press in. The choice is clear: Rob ourselves of life for a few moments of pleasure, or hold off on that pleasure for abundant life. Let's choose LIFE today.

Prayer: Father, I realize Your Will is for me to take hold of everything You say is mine. I repent for the many times I chose sin and death over life and peace. May I show what real fellowship means through my life by walking in the Spirit daily. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

A Testament To Faith!

Wednesday April 13, 2011

Today's Passage: Acts 25:1-28-31
Memory Verse: Acts Acts 26:29

I've always been moved by movies that depict the triumph of the human spirit.  You know what I mean?  I'm talking about the unsung hero, the guy who won't necessarily get "the girl", but the one who'll be satisfied with justice.

Paul became that guy.  After the whole 'Damascus Road' ordeal, he did a complete 180.  He became so passionate about his faith, he would literally die for it.  I can think of many things I love, but I wouldn't think about giving my life for them.  I'd give my life for my family, but Paul even took that to another level.  He was willing to give his life so that generations could be exposed to God's Word.  In our passage, the Jews were persecuting Paul because he was telling people Jesus rose again and yet lives.  That was news they didn't want to hear.  It reminds me of the series on love we were in at our church.  Some of the things being said were not pleasing to our flesh.  We didn't want to confront the fact that we needed to forgive ourselves and others.  In fact, holding on to that bitterness had become normal; comfortable even.  The Jews wasn't ready to accept the fact that Jesus lived because, if they had, it'd make them accountable for everything He'd said.  And that, in and of itself, is the problem.  Very few people want to be held accountable for their own actions.  Today, society commonly blames depression, abuse, low socio-economic status, and hardship for sin.  It's not that those things aren't relevant, it's just that blaming them tends to exonerate us from being responsible individuals.  So, we've become a society that has "built-in" excuses for failure and bad choices.

In conclusion, we have to be able to stand like Paul did.   As he stood before King Agrippa and told his whole life story.  By the time he was done, the king said "If you keep this up much longer, you'll make a Christian out of me".  And Paul, while he was still in chains, said "That's what I'm praying for".  Who will we pray for?  Can we find the words of prayer in the midst of the offense, or our own place of persecution?  I think that's the essence of spiritual maturity.  I also think it's a testament to our faith.....

Prayer: Father, I want grow stronger in You.  If I can grow stronger, I'll be able to stand without fear.  My desire is to hide Your Word so deeply in my heart, I won't even consider parting from it.  Whether in persecution, or victory, Your Word will always be my guiding light.  Keep me in Your awesome care, in Jesus' name. Amen

Something New

Tuesday, April 12th, 2011

Today's Passage: Acts chapters 16-20
Memory Verse(s): Acts 17:28

We all love the smell and feel of things that are brand- spanking new; those shoes that we wish we could let stay in the box forever. That furniture looked so wonderful in the store, we practically glared at everyone who wanted to sit on it when we first brought it home. And don't even get me started about the cars we've purchased! We'd give anything to make each one maintain its shiny exterior, doing our best to drive it without leaving smudges or dirt.

But sooner or later, the inevitable happens. That shine begins to wear off. The brand new smell gradually disappears, and absorbs the common, everyday smells like other things. And then the new things become used and unappreciated... Like everything else. What happens after that? We begin the whole cycle again-- giving or throwing away what we once cherished so greatly, only to make room for more of the same.

In today's passage, the Greeks were so fed up with knowledge that they were hungry for something to give their lives meaning again. The funny thing about this habit is that we sometimes see our walk in Christ in pretty much the same way. When we first give our hearts to the Lord, we can't wait to tell others what He's done in us. Every waking moment is vital and consumed by the fact that we've been made new. But something happens to change that mindset. Perhaps we've spent entirely too much time on this earth, because we begin to get bored with the things of God, thinking we can find excitement and satisfaction elsewhere.

But nothing God purchased for us gets old -- in fact, He is so far removed from aging and outside of time that we have to renew our minds every 24 hours just to be able to keep up with Him. If you asked me, I'd definitely tell you this: we'd never have a dull moment if we actually spent our time attending to matters such as conforming to the image of God's Son Jesus. That alone would make it impossible for us to do anything else. Every morning, His mercies are new so that we don't even have to look at the world in the same manner that we did yesterday. In short, believers should never be looking for somewhere to deposit our relationship with God because it's old and worn out. There's ALWAYS something new and wondrous to discover.

Prayer: Father, I've known You now for quite some time, but keep finding brand new things about You. Your Holy Spirit gives me the freedom to explore new territority and keeps me longing for more. Thank You for giving me Yourself. There are NO limits in You. I pray now for my brothers and sisters who're tired of spitting up and swallowing the same old lives if they don't know You. I pray that for even the ones who do, but have allowed their walk to get cold, may they experience a whole new dimension of You that totally transforms and rejuvenates them forever. In Jesus' Name, Amen!

And Suddenly!!!!!

Monday, April 11th, 2011

Today's Passage: Acts chapter 16
Memory Verse(s): 1 CorInthians 15:58

Out of all the stories about Paul, we love this one the best. Who doesn't relish the idea of possibly being able to see God single-handedly astound and shame our enemies right in front of us? But of course, nothing is ever that simple in the kingdom of God. Yes, He's the God of the miraculous, and He loves to show Himself strong in our lives even more than we think.

What we need to remember, however, is the fact that Paul and the other apostles lived in such a way that God had room to be a part of everything they did. Take this chapter, for example. They went from one place to another, allowing the Holy Spirit to lead and guide them daily. Wherever they went, they did whatever God was expecting of them. They taught all men (and women) the life of the gospel of Christ.

And not only that, but they seized any opportunity to remind the enemy that he was a defeated foe. They knew that persecution came with the territory. So when they were arrested for casting out that spirit, they certainly didn't fall apart, asking God the infamous question, "Why us?" They already knew to go on with life, remembering that our Sovereign God orders our every step, and no scheme or plan the enemy has concocted shall prosper.

Having said all that, what was their reward for being steadfast, unmovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord? It was the "And Suddenly" that God performed on their behalf. They were just doing the will of God and BEING the godly men they had been anointed to do, not whining about where they were. They didn't even try to bargain with God to make their season of testing shorter, as some of us may try to do in a similar situation. They simply continued to live Totally Devoted to their God. So, when the "And Suddenly" occurred, they were found walking in integrity and all wisdom. They didn't even try to break out of prison. They refused to bring ANY type of reproach on their Lord's Name. So guess Who got all the glory in that situation? God, of course. May we be also ready to let our faithfulness move on our behalf. We'd be more likely to see those "And Suddenly's" manifest all around us.

Prayer: Father, this day I thank You for Your Spirit that leads and guides me into ALL truth. On this truth I will display Your greatness, Your grace, and Your great love. No matter what, I desire to remember I'm all Yours, even through persecution, so that You can be glorified every step of the way. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

Prayers That Prevail!

Sunday April 10, 2011

Father, giving You glory is our top priority.  So let Your kingdom come and Your will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven.  As we praise You today, fill our hearts with Your Holy presence.  We are nothing without You.  Our desire today is pleasure.  We want to be a people that please You.  To do that, we must first trust You.  Our faith has to go to new levels.  Then, we must love.  Lord, cause us to be patient and kind.  We don't want to get puffed up, or be rude to each other.  We want to have compassion for Your creation.  And we want to love others like we love ourselves.

Father, let Your spirit change us.  Put to rest our selfish ways.  Do away with our rebellion.  Let us rest firmly in Your capable hands.   Heal us, redeem us, save us, and reign over us.  We are forever submitted to You, in Jesus' name. Amen.

What's Your Damascus?

Saturday April 9, 2011

Today's Passage: Acts 9:1-9:31
Memory Verse: Acts 9:18

I can't believe we actually live in a day when people try to persecute Christians.  Really?  I mean, I thought as a society people at least respected the IDEA of God.  But some of these protests and things are proving otherwise.  How can man hate someone who loves so much?  Has evil become so popluar that it can openly defame the things of God without consequence?

I guess this kind of stuff is not new to God.  I was reading our passage for today and, low and behold, it was about Saul.  This guy was relentless.  He went all over the place persecuting Christians.  Have you ever met anyone like this?  Is there someone at work who always has a negative view of God or the church?  Several people come to mind.  Sometimes we even persecute Jesus.  How, by protesting against His place in our lives when we want to go "off the reservation".  But, Saul took things to new levels.  He was getting warrants for people's arrest.   He was going from city to city looking for certain people, and he would even find leaders and have them arrested.  There are people in our generation who are just like Saul was.  They go to extremes to deny Christ.  In some countries, the arrest and persecution of believers are still common practices.  While in America, where people are free to worship, our pastors have to all but beg us to attend church services and functions.  Anyway, Saul had a nasty disposition when it came to the church.  But why?  In most cases, you can find out why a person does something by looking at past experiences.  For example, before the whole persecution thing, there was a guy named Stephen.  Well, Stephen was stoned to death for being a man of God.  Before the stoning took place however, the men took off their coats so they could throw.  Guess who held their coats for them?  That's right, a young Saul.  Ever wonder why you have a certain mentality about something?  Does it bother you that you have problems with something or someone who's never directly done anything you?  It may be due to past experience.  Resentment (like Saul's) may come from buying into someone else' judgement or negative opinions.  That's why God says we are to become "new" creatures.  He wants us to give up those old beliefs and opinions and see things from a different perspective.

Speaking of perspective, Saul was on Damascus road when a light suddenly knocked him off his horse and blinded him.  Sounds aweful doesn't it?  Well, before you feel bad for him, understand what he gained from this experience.  Better yet, understand what WE gained form it.  Suddenly, Saul saw who Jesus really was.  Sometimes it takes a lil' knockdown to produce a get-up in you.   His heart was totally transformed.  Side note: Isn't it good to know no matter what you've done God still has use for you if you'll submit to him?  Okay, back to the point.  Now, because of his ordeal, his writings are winning souls for Jesus even today.  Watch this!  Most of what he wrote came from behind the prison walls where he himself had put some of the very people he wrote to.   Funny huh?  Saul became a great teacher and orator.  So, there's hope for anyone, even the one's who speak out against Jesus today.  We just have to make sure we're staying on track.  We must keep our focus on the call of God and not get distracted.  We can't live our lives being afraid of the "Sauls" of the world.  They only have the power we allow them to have.  So, go with the church, not against her.  Afterall, you'll need her to accomplish your destiny and fulfill your purpose.

Prayer:  Father, let me first repent for the times I've gone against You.  Then, let me thank You for my own "Damascus road" experience.  Thanks for letting me see You in a real way.  If you'll give me a chance, I'll be the greatest asset I can be for You...in Jesus' name. Amen

Unity: Simply Heavenly

Friday April 8, 2011

Today's Passage: Acts 10:1-11:18
Memory Verse: Psalms 133:1

One of the things that's always confused me about us is racism.  The idea of ritual hate because (and only because) of the color of another's skin is unfathomable.  What I do understand however, is people's backgrounds are different.  In that, people seem to be a product of what they were taught as children.  "Don't go there, don't do that, don't, don't, don't".  Our lives are full of don'ts.  And because we were children, we didn't possess the wherewithall to ask why, or why not.

In today's passage, Peter was taught a harsh lesson about racism.  God used an Italian guard captain to teach him.  You see, Cornelious, the captain, was a devout Christian.  Although he wasn't jewish, he loved God with all his heart.  In Caesarea where he lived, he was active in helping the needy and habitually commited himself to prayer.  People of God, we have to stop making assessments about things based on what they look like on the outside.  God has sent some of our greatest assets to our lives but we've dismissed them because they didn't "look" the part.  Honestly, do you think you may have missed out on the spouse God sent, or maybe that best friend, all because when you met them they didn't look like much?  Adversely, when what "looked" good approached you, did you dive in head first, only to be left with divorce, betrayal, and pain?    God showed Peter that man didn't have to be jewish to earn His love and favor.  You don't have to be white to have favor, nor do you have to be black, latino, or hispanic to be blessed.  All you have to be is forgiven, obedient, and loving.  Last I checked, those were not races of people, they were contents of character.   Racism hurts.  It binds people from fulfilling their true potential.  How?  When we limit ourselves to loving or receiving from only one group of people,  we miss out on the gifts possessed by other groups.  Racism also keeps us from experiencing the presence of God.  Think about it.  God would contradict Himself if He allowed His presence to uplift a place where hate for His other sons and daughters is bred.  It's in His word.  Psalms 133 says it is in unity He commands the blessing: Even life forever more.  At the end of today's passage, when Peter arrived at Cornelious' house, there was a powerful move of God's spirit.  What? A jew and an italian in a house worshipping and fellowshipping together?  Yep! And God even showed up.

I challenge you this week to look around your life.  Take a look at the people you call friend.  Are they all one race?  Then, take a look at where you worship.  Why?  Well, because church is practice for Heaven right?  So, is your worship place a true depiction of what Heaven will be like?  Let me let you in on a lil' secret.  There's not going to be a black Heaven, or a white Heaven, or a latino Heaven, and so forth.   Behold!  All the bretheren will be dwelling together in unity (Ps 133) when we get there.  I'm thankful that no matter which one of my neighbors I'm with, I can invite them to church and when they get there, they won't feel out of place.  Because, although we have white and black members, there's no white power, or black power.  And although we have hispanic and latino members, there's no hispanic power, or latino power.  Only God's power exits there.  He in us, and us in Him......and that my friend is Heavenly!

Prayer: Father I thank You for giving us unity.  We all possess the same capacity to love, we just have to allow ourselves to do it.  You created all of us in Your image.  You didn't make any one greater than the other.  So let us love one another as You instructed.  As we grow closer to You, we'll grow closer to each other, in Jesus' name...Amen.

The Silent Witness

Thursday, April 7th, 2011

Today's Passage: Acts 8:26-40
Memory Verse(s): Matt. 28:18-19

This is a series of true stories that happen everyday. The first one is a common one of a little boy, barely three years old, who is trying to reach the knobs on a stove. His stubby little fingers explore the shiny things he thinks are toys. Little does he know, these knobs have ignited the gas which is now escaping into the tiny room that he's standing in. Before long, his mother pulls out a cigarette and gets ready to light it, completely unaware that the tiny flame will start a huge fire that may destroy them all. Just at that moment, the child's aunt steps into the kitchen and sees what the boy is about to do. FREEZE.

On the other side of town, a young woman is preparing for bed. Part of her nightly ritual is to stretch her limbs and undress while standing in her window. There is a curtain that stops people from seeing any actual part of her, but for some men known as predators the silhouette is enough to feed the imagination and allow their degenerate minds to plot and scheme. Little does she know that one of such individuals has been watching her ritual for weeks, waiting for the right opportunity to strike. Thankfully, another man is watching this exchange, and decides to call 9-11. FREEZE.

Perhaps even more uncommon is the story of a young man who is about to take a swim in the pond behind his house. Everything is right-- the temperature of the water, the warmth of the sun, and the emptiness of his parents house as he prepares to entertain all his friends later on that evening. But what this young person doesn't know as he steps in is that a hungry alligator lies in wait for him, very still in the silent pond. Good thing the young man's sister has been watching all along, and won't let him step foot in that water. FREEZE.

Now suppose you are the victim in all 3 scenarios. Someone nearby has the power in their mouths to say just one word to stop the imminent danger from becoming reality. But they don't because of the same reasons people give everyday. "He's too young; he won't know the difference." "It's a free country. People should be able to do whatever they want"; "What if they reject me?". Each situation is just as deadly, and yet we make the same excuses for not witnessing to others. May the Lord's heart be infused into ours as we look into the harvest fields, ripe and ready. For the Master is soon to come.

Prayer: Father, Your Son gave life to us all. I don't want to break His heart because of fear, apathy, or ignorance of the times. Help me be sensitive to Your Spirit and obedient to You, no matter what... Not juSt because of the reward that awaits me, but because I'm eager to please you. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

Swimming Upstream!

Wednesday April 6, 2011

Today's Passage: Acts 6:8-8:8
Memory Verse: Philippians 1:21

I was watching the Discovery channel the other day during their show about bears.  When they got to the part about feeding, they showed the bear in the middle of the water catching the salmon as they swam up stream.  "Upstream", I thought.  What caught my attention was the many times we (Christians) have to swim upstream, or go against the grain.  Today's passage talks about Stephen.  Was he a salmon or what?  Okay, I took the analogy to far.  But, he is considered one of the first matyrs.

A martyr is a person who suffers death rather than renounce their convictions or religion.  Talk about swimming upstream!  Stephen was so true to what he believed it angered the people around him.  What makes it crazy is, he didn't even go around thumping his Bible and telling people they were going to hell.  He mainly talked about the love of Jesus, and he demonstrated that love.  Because of his submission, signs followed Stephen whereever he went.  People marvelled at the way he used God's word to open people's eyes.  However, this wasn't the popular thing to do at this time.  Like many Christians today, standing for what we believe is not always met with kindness.  The reason is that there are people who are completely resistant to change.  It scares them, it upsets them, and it makes them resent anyone who believes otherwise.  Our generation has become so liberal in its approach.  Its seems nothing is off limits.  What used to be taboo, is now the popular thing.  For instance, divorce has become more common among marriages than anniversaries.  And sexual immorality has been promoted to the means by which we avoid loneliness.  Similarly to Stephen's generation, it's not a good (social) time to be a Christian.  But just like Stephen, we have to stand.

My heart broke for Stephen as the angry mob hit him with stone after stone.  How could people do this to a good man?  I'm sure there were men in that town who were murderers, rapists, thieves, and other unscrupulous things, but they stoned Stephen for giving life.  In the end, Stephen wouldn't want us to grieve for him.  Can you imagine what his crown will look like in Heaven?  Think about it, many of our soldiers today will tell you if they were to die, they'd rather die in battle.  Wouldn't you rather go out doing the work of the Lord?  Don't you want to be known as the person who died while fulfilling the call?   In conclusion, don't be afraid to swim upstream.  You have to against the world's grain to get the message out.  Don't be afraid to be the opposite.  Yes, dare to be different.    The reward for doing so will be more than you could ever imagine.  You may never be a martyr, but you must always be willing to give up your life for the upward call.  So take the resentment.  Take the ridicule.  Let it pass over you without influence.  Because the truth lives within you.  Therefore your only mission is to get it out as much as you can.  Why worry anyway, to live is Christ, and to die is gain.

Prayer: Father I thank You for everything You've done for me.  You've been so good to me I can't help but share the message of Your goodness.  Lord, I will no longer be afraid or embarrassed to tell people how good You are.  You are simply the best I could ever hope for.  All I have and all I am is Yours....in Jesus' name. Amen.

And They'll Know We Are Christians....

Today's Passage: Acts chapters 3 and 4
Memory Verse(s): Acts 4: 32-34

It was the first Sunday in January, 2011.  Our pastors brought the vision of what God was telling them.  The major word was ACTION.  We were given the mandate from God to put legs to all the words we had received.  The first thing they felt led to motivate us to do was to take steps to make the storehouse operable.  We would raise money to get it up and running, then begin to stock it with  whatever would be necessary to meet the need.

Within weeks, the money has been raised.  Like never before, we are coming together and doing whatever we can to be a blessing to one another-- especially since "the Love series".  When I read today's passage, my heart leaped within me.  Our church sounded an awful lot like a bunch of people in that early church...except for the  "added daily" part.

The book of Acts describes a constant flow of people to the kingdom daily.  This flow numbered in the thousands.  Why?  Was it only because of the way they pooled their resources together and made all their materials common property?  On the surface, yes.  But there was another element at work that we have heard about so many times in the last few weeks.  It was the sincere, genuine love they had for God and for each other that made them stand out.

When we genuinely love, we hasten to do things for others --not out of obligation, but from a place of compassion.  While they were taking care of one another, there was another steady stream of needy people that they encountered everyday-- pretty much just like we do.  Except for the fact that I didn't hear the judgment in Peter's statement when he offered the man the healing power of Christ.  Because they were so in tune with the Father's heart, miracles also flowed freely.  My prayer is that the Holy Spirit will so fill us with His grace and power to see the lost saved and the broken restored that it will take place instantaneously-- and that the lost will flock to our demonstration of love to the glory of God the Father.

Prayer, Father, we desire to do what Jesus did-- not for recognition or glory.  As You see our hearts, draw us to Your will as Your people are drawn to our love for You... In Jesus' Name, Amen.

Who is the Holy Spirit to You?

Today's Passage: Acts chapter 2
Memory Verse(s): Acts 1:8

Almost every Christian that you talk to will tell you that he or she believes in the Holy Spirit. However, exactly WHAT He is is a mystery. Many can't grasp His purpose beyond the head knowledge of the doctrine that their particular denominations profess. So, aside from all that, let's just take a journey into my personal experience with the Holy Spirit.

What do I believe about the Holy Spirit? First of all, I know Him to be a Person, not a thing. He is manifested as the Third Person of the Triune Being that is our God. He was the One sent by God the Father after Jesus ascended into Heaven. Jesus' death made it possible for Him to be multiplied in the spirit of every believer.

Before I accepted Christ, I experienced the Holy Spirit only on rare occasions when I visited churches where He was made welcome. Now that I think about it, there was no conviction of my sin at my church where I was only going through the motions through liturgy and other religious rhetoric. But as soon as I entered a church where He was at home, I could tell the difference. I could feel Him speaking to me, urging me to let the Son live in my heart.

When I finally listened and obeyed, I now had a constant reminder of the Father's will on a daily basis in my life. Every time I obey, I hear Him whisper, "Well done, daughter. The Father is pleased.". But when I mess up, He counteracts the voice of the accuser of the brethren who speaks only condemnation. He speaks life to my spirit again, filling me with the desire to conform to the image of my Father. Not a day goes by that I'm not grateful for His presence. I wouldn't trade Him for all the gold in the universe. Invite Him to live in you today.

Prayer: Father, thank You for the Holy Spirit. He is the Interpreter of the things You want for my life. He makes You real to me, and never let's me forget that I'm Yours. Live big in me through Him and possess me to be everything You desire from me. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

Prayers That Prevail!

Sunday April 3, 2011

My beloved friends, let us continue to love each other since love comes from God.  Everyone who loves is born of God and experiences a relationship with God.  The person that refuses to love doesn't know the first thing about God, because God is love--so you can't know Him if you don't love.
1 John 4:7-8 (Mess.)

Father this is the day that fresh revelation will change my life.  That revelation is "Your" meaning of love.  Lord I always thought I should only love those who love me first.  I also thought You would excuse me from loving those who hurt or betrayed me.  But You have shown me what true love really is, and You started with me.  How unlovable was I when You found me?  How many times have I turned away from You since then?

Lord I can see my way through to praise You more and more now.  How?  I now understand how love works.  I understand that love is patient and kind, is not puffed up and suffers long.  I even understand why You gave me the capacity to love.  The reason was to use it to meet someone else' need.  What a fool I was Father to think love was a feeling.  For so long I thought love was my response to what made me feel good.  I didn't know that being in love meant being in You.

So let my life be a demonstration of Your love.  I no longer want to be rooted in the things I "thought" love was.  I want to bear the fruit of love everyday of my life.  That's what brings You glory, Lord.  That's where You are pleased.  Now, give me the strength and courage to live by this new revelation.....in Jesus' name. Amen

Why I Believe

Today's Passage: John chapters 20 & 21
Memory Verse(s): John 20:18

The things people will believe are mind- boggling to me.  There are thousands of websites  dedicated to all sorts of weird things like aliens and ghosts in need of closure.  Over the last ten years alone, more people have taken interest in alien abductions, psychics, and houses with ghosts than ever before.  But the moment you mention Jesus, you're looked at as the one with mental issues.

And yet, no-one person on the face of the earth -- or in heaven, for that matter-- else ever claimed to die for the sin and salvation of the entire world.  And something else sticks out to me about this Jesus.  Why would a man Who died for the whole world only appear to a select few?  In this day and age, anyone claiming to have any kind of power would want to broadcast it as quickly and widely as possible.

Furthermore, if the fact that Jesus' body was never found doesn't help the argument much, something interesting happened to His disciples after He went back to Heaven.  All of a sudden, people who were once meek, scared and unsure of themselves became bold enough to stand before kings and priests alike.  What was it about Jesus that made them change?  The difference was the Holy Spirit.  Jesus breathed Him upon them, and they were never the same again.

Now here's the best part of why I believe that Jesus did rise from the dead.  He didn't just disappear for three days, twiddling His fingers.  He went to hell and took the power of death away from the enemy of our souls.  That's why His disciples went willingly to their deaths, declaring the whole time that Jesus was the Christ.  And that's why we, His brethren, can stand in the face of adversity and not blink.  We carry this same treasure in our earthen vessels-- the power to heal, love, serve, give, and change the world.  And we will do so until He comes again.  Now that's something worth believing in.

Prayer: Father, we live in a world where the enemy's influence makes it so difficult for people to believe in what Your Son did.  But You still send us out to give them this good news-- the news of how much You love us all.  Fill us with Your Spirit, and make us bold enough to declare it no matter where we are... And who doesn't receive Your Precious gift.  In Jesus' Name, Amen.
